{"id":192763,"date":"2025-11-21T15:27:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T15:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/192763\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T15:27:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T15:27:09","slug":"reform-uks-former-wales-leader-jailed-for-more-than-10-years-for-taking-pro-russia-bribes-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/192763\/","title":{"rendered":"Reform UK\u2019s former Wales leader jailed for more than 10 years for taking pro-Russia bribes \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The former leader of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/reform-uk\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/reform-uk\/\">Reform UK<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wales\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/wales\/\">Wales<\/a> has been jailed for 10\u00bd years after he made pro-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\">Russian<\/a> statements in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-parliament\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-parliament\/\">European Parliament<\/a> for cash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nathan Gill (52) of Anglesey, north Wales, pleaded guilty to eight counts of bribery on dates between December 6th, 2018 and July 18th, 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Sentencing him on Friday, Ms Justice Cheema-Grubb said the harm he caused was \u201cprofound\u201d and that he \u201cfundamentally compromised\u201d the integrity of a legislative body for \u201csubstantial\u201d financial gain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gill had allowed money to \u201ccorrupt his moral compass\u201d when it had been his duty as an elected official to \u201cspeak with honesty and conviction\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhen you say what someone has paid you to say you are not speaking with sincerity,\u201d the judge said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The ex-MEP\u2019s activities included making pro-Russian statements about events in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war\/\">Ukraine<\/a> in the European Parliament and in opinion pieces to news outlets, such as 112 Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Opening the facts of the case at the Old Bailey on Friday, prosecutor Mark Heywood KC said Gill\u2019s crimes were exposed after he was stopped at Manchester airport on September 13th, 2021 as he attempted to travel to Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gill\u2019s mobile phone was examined and messages were found between him and Oleg Voloshyn (44), a pro-Russian Ukrainian government official before 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Heywood said: \u201cThe communications between the two men showed that an established relationship existed between them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">WhatsApp messages between the pair included references to \u201cpromised x-mas gifts\u201d, \u201cpostcards\u201d and \u201c5K\u201d, which was a reference to payments, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">After speaking from a script at one debate, Mr Voloshyn told him, \u201cimpressive &#8230; you are the perfect orator\u201d, the court was told.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Further exchanges between the pair related to Mr Voloshyn getting \u20ac5,000 for Gill for speaking with the Ukrainian news channel 112 Ukraine about the case of Victor Medvedchuk, a Ukraine national and ally of Vladimir Putin, being prosecuted for treason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In more messages, Gill was invited to encourage others to adopt the same approach and repeat the same line that he had given, the court was told.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There were references to other members of the European Parliament, including British representatives and politicians from the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Voloshyn reported that if Gill could get three, then \u201cthey\u201d would be extremely grateful and that his fee would be \u201c5K\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Following the 2019 European elections, Mr Voloshyn asked Gill to arrange for colleagues from the Brexit Party to attend a presentation by Mr Medvedchuk on the ongoing conflict in the Donbas region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Heywood said the Ukrainian asked Gill to book a room and various names were mentioned including a \u201cleading figure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In response to Gill\u2019s certainty that he could \u201cdrag a few in to attend\u201d, Mr Voloshyn promised he would be fairly rewarded, and said: \u201cI already have a small sack of paper gifts for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the time of the offences, Gill was a member of the European Parliament, having been originally elected for the UK Independence Party (Ukip).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On January 30th, 2020, there were a series of exchanges between Gill and Mr Voloshyn, who passed on thanks from \u201cV\u201d, which was said to be Mr Medvedchuk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The next day, Gill ceased to be an MEP on the departure of the UK from the European Union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Following his arrest, Gill declined to comment in police interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On the harm he had caused, Mr Heywood said his actions had \u201cthe capacity significantly to affect public trust in not only the individuals who are elected representatives of the public, but also the operation of Parliament and its processes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the time of the bribery, Mr Voloshyn was also a member of the Ukrainian parliament and had links to media outlets such as 112 Ukraine, with which his wife was associated, the court heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He is now believed to be living in Russia and is wanted by authorities in Britain and Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Medvedchuk, who was the ultimate source of requests to Gill and the money he received, was arrested in 2021 and sent to Russia in 2022 as part of a prisoner exchange.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Gill led Reform UK\u2019s 2021 Welsh Parliament election campaign but is no longer a member of the party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Commander Dominic Murphy, the head of the Metropolitan Police counter-terrorism command, told the PA news agency the \u201cseriousness\u201d of the crimes was reflected in Gill\u2019s sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said: \u201cWhen we elect individuals, in whatever parliament, in whatever circumstance, we do so because as constituents, we want them to act in our best interests and, of course, the best interests of the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIn this case, Nathan Gill has put aside the best interests of this country and, in fact, agreed to take payment to ask questions or make statements that were pro-Russia in nature as a result of payments from the Opposition parties in Ukraine at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Britain\u2019s security minister, Dan Jarvis, said in a statement: \u201cNathan Gill used his privileged position in public office to advance the malign interests of Russia over those of the UK in exchange for money \u2013 that is a betrayal of our country, our people, and our national security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Liberal Democrats leader Sir Ed Davey demanded an investigation into Russian interference in British politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said: \u201cA traitor was at the very top of Reform UK, aiding and abetting a foreign adversary. Nigel Farage and his party are a danger to national security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A Reform UK spokesman said: \u201cMr Gill\u2019s actions were reprehensible, treasonous and unforgivable.
