{"id":193195,"date":"2025-11-21T20:54:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T20:54:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/193195\/"},"modified":"2025-11-21T20:54:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T20:54:10","slug":"ukraine-facing-one-of-most-difficult-moments-as-trump-sets-thanksgiving-deadline-for-peace-plan-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/193195\/","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine facing \u2018one of most difficult moments\u2019 as Trump sets Thanksgiving deadline for peace plan \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\">Ukrainian<\/a> president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/volodymyr-zelenskiy\/\">Volodymyr Zelenskiy<\/a> said his nation faces \u201cone of the most difficult moments in our history\u201d as US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> gave Kyiv until next Thursday to agree to end its war with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\"> Russia<\/a> on terms that heavily favour the Kremlin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Zelenskiy said on Friday that he would work with Washington to forge a plan that protects Ukraine\u2019s national interests and dignity, and he spoke to European leaders who fear being sidelined from any peace process by the White House and the Kremlin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US presented Ukraine with a 28-point peace plan on Thursday that would oblige it to give up parts of the eastern Donetsk region that it still controls, abandon its Nato membership ambitions and accept limits on the size of its defence forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Almost all the Ukrainian territory now occupied by Moscow\u2019s troops would be recognised as de facto Russian under the proposals, which make no provision for war crimes prosecutions against Russia and offer only vague security guarantees to Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201c\u200b\u200bNow is one of the most difficult moments in our history. Now the pressure on Ukraine is some of the heaviest. Now Ukraine may face a very difficult choice: either the loss of dignity, or the risk of losing a key partner. Either 28 difficult points, or an extremely difficult winter \u2013 the most difficult,\u201d Mr Zelenskiy said in sombre address.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cUkraine will work quickly &#8230; for as long as it takes, in 24\/7 mode. Photograph: Andrew Kravchenko\/Bloomberg <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Shortly after Mr Zelenskiy\u2019s address was broadcast, Mr Trump told Fox News that Thanksgiving next week was a deadline for agreement on the plan. \u201cI\u2019ve had a lot of deadlines, but if things are working well, you tend to extend the deadlines.
