{"id":194857,"date":"2025-11-22T19:45:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-22T19:45:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/194857\/"},"modified":"2025-11-22T19:45:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T19:45:14","slug":"uae-announces-landmark-1-billion-initiative-to-expand-ai-infrastructure-across-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/194857\/","title":{"rendered":"UAE announces landmark $1 billion initiative to expand AI infrastructure across Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-0-7TCC5VLU2NEKFGTJYUVI66ZSUA\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/uae\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/uae\/\">UAE<\/a> announced a $1 billion &#8220;AI for development initiative&#8221; on Saturday, unveiling a plan to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\/\">AI<\/a>-enabled services across Africa, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/11\/22\/south-africa-hosts-first-african-g20-summit-amid-us-boycott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/11\/22\/south-africa-hosts-first-african-g20-summit-amid-us-boycott\/\">G20 leaders&#8217; summit<\/a> in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-1-FGBCZZHOFNH5ZLWYHJH4MM7ME4\">The initiative was announced during a speech delivered at the G20 by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, who led the UAE delegation on behalf of President Sheikh Mohamed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-3-ND4O3Q6AQNDJRBWN3AKNBPDTPU\">It will provide access to AI computing power, technical expertise and global partnerships, while supporting African countries in delivering projects in education, agriculture, health care, digital identity and climate adaptation, said Minister of State Saeed Al Hajeri.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-5-SMO3KK3H5JDKDLRF3JG46KFEQM\">The UAE ranks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/08\/18\/uae-and-saudi-arabia-among-worlds-top-three-ai-superpowers-analysis-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/08\/18\/uae-and-saudi-arabia-among-worlds-top-three-ai-superpowers-analysis-finds\/\">second globally<\/a> in artificial intelligence capability, according to a 2025 study by TRG Datacenters, a Texas company focused on national AI supercomputing power, AI company activity and government AI readiness \u2013 placing it behind the United States. The Emirates has more than 188,000 AI chips and a total power capacity of 6.4K megawatts, the company says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-6-EVLLUV5GQBCNBIMRCID3SM3VD4\">It is now seeking to put artificial intelligence \u201cat the service of development, by developing digital infrastructure, enhancing government services and improving productivity\u201d in Africa. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-8-ZOTRCEPEABHXDPSQHNXTZNTJ3E\">\u201cThis is AI deployed at scale to meet national development priorities \u2013 not experimental work, but practical delivery,\u201d said Mr Al Hajeri. \u201cOur goal now is to ensure these capabilities benefit partners across the Global South, and that no country is left behind in the AI age.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-BSK3JVACMZCWRISIFNHS33DB7U\">This week, the US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/11\/20\/uae-ai-nvidia-chips-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/11\/20\/uae-ai-nvidia-chips-us\/\">authorised the export<\/a> of Nvidia&#8217;s AI chips to UAE artificial intelligence company G42 and Saudi tech start-up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/2025\/10\/28\/pif-backed-ai-firm-humain-unveils-next-generation-agentic-operating-system-at-fii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/2025\/10\/28\/pif-backed-ai-firm-humain-unveils-next-generation-agentic-operating-system-at-fii\/\">Humain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-WA3DHIVHTRA3XGE2EAYYT2L24A\">The approval was seen as a significant step for the UAE and Saudi Arabia&#8217;s broader diversification efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-11-7FGY327A5ZEZJL3JKT7LTCEL6E\">The announcement falls under bilateral deals the US has made with the two Gulf countries. In March, the UAE pledged to spend $1.4 trillion in the US as part of a broader technology investment framework. In May, the UAE announced plans to launch a 5 gigawatt UAE-US AI Campus during US President Donald Trump&#8217;s visit to the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-2IMMLEQUCJAGLFKUAPZDVSEFFM\">The UAE has developed start-ups, partnerships and attracted investments from major tech companies, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/05\/08\/microsoft-president-brad-smith-uae-ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/future\/technology\/2025\/05\/08\/microsoft-president-brad-smith-uae-ai\/\">Microsoft<\/a>, Nvidia and OpenAI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-SY5JNIWWRZBE3OAGOMWEDPV35A\">Mr Al Hajeri&#8217;s remarks were made during the G20 meeting. Although not a formal G20 member, the UAE participates as an invited guest.<\/p>\n<p><b>Commitment to Africa<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-BHKOEBA4VNHX3GG4TL5ZZXVJWM\">Mr Al Hajeri said his country&#8217;s commitment to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/09\/16\/african-union-commission-chief-says-libyan-scenario-must-not-be-repeated-in-sudan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/mena\/2025\/09\/16\/african-union-commission-chief-says-libyan-scenario-must-not-be-repeated-in-sudan\/\">Africa<\/a> extends beyond technology. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-6XXPKHNGMZACHPO4WV6FK4B4O4\">\u201cWe are delivering large-scale clean energy projects across the continent. The UAE is preparing to co-host the 2026 United Nations Water Conference, in partnership with the Republic of Senegal,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-18-XOQ5AQTAL5HJDD3Y2HKER3WAF4\">The UAE is also a major aid donor in Africa, providing $1.05 billion in total assistance in 2023 and last year, according to the UAE Aid dashboard.
