Following Thursday’s tumble, the index was 5% down from its October high, its first 5% pullback in 149 days, said Keith Lerner, chief investment officer at Truist Advisory Services. By comparison, there has been an average of 77 days between pullbacks of at least 5% since 2010, Lerner said.

The S&P 500’s price-to-earnings ratio, based on earnings estimates for the next 12 months, had dipped to 21.8 as of Thursday, down from 23.5 about a month ago, according to LSEG Datastream. But that current valuation still stood well above its 10-year average of 18.8.

“You’re resetting those high expectations,” Lerner said. “That likely has maybe a little bit more to go as far as just people having more doubts and uncertainties.”

Meanwhile, retail investors who bought the dip following April’s tariff swoon and have helped the market bounce back from selloffs, are showing signs of fatigue.

“While we are not seeing retail investors contributing to the selloff, they are also not showing strong buy-the-dip interest,” JPMorgan analysts wrote in a note on Thursday.

FED RATE CUT UNCERTAINTY

A crucial uncertainty set to dog markets in coming days is whether the Fed will cut rates at its December 9-10 meeting, a move seen as a done deal up until late last month.

Investors were divided over the implications of Thursday’s delayed jobs data release for September, the last employment report before next month’s meeting. In such cases, December has shown nearly double its average historical gains.

Some investors said they saw opportunities. Due to elevated valuations, Nesbitt says he has been underweight the information technology sector, but it is “starting to look a little bit more attractive.”

Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Cresset Capital, said investors are often reluctant to sell their winners in December to forestall paying taxes on capital gains.

“I don’t think investors want to run from the markets,” Ablin said. “What they want to really do is dig in and find opportunities.”

Reporting by Lewis Krauskopf; Editing by Richard Chang

Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles., opens new tab

Purchase Licensing Rights

S&P 500 down 4% from Oct record high, Nasdaq off 7% from peak Volatility rising, indexes see biggest…

[261
291,82519,85421,85419,82793,289,290,82758,84370,8535,84433,82500,82530,84146,82531,82529,83115,83116,18,85420,32356,82503,45748,19,84365,84368,82766,82767,94732,17,83122,82524,85212,82510,82512,84338,88028,84106,84107,84457,82801,753,82,82999,30150,107
0":"post-196027","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-artificial-intelligence","8":"tag-ai","9":"tag-amers","10":"tag-anlins","11":"tag-anv","12":"tag-arti","13":"tag-artificial-intelligence","14":"tag-artificialintelligence","15":"tag-bisv","16":"tag-cen","17":"tag-chip","18":"tag-chip1","19":"tag-cmpny","20":"tag-destocabsm","21":"tag-destortao","22":"tag-destousbsm","23":"tag-destoustcm","24":"tag-eci","25":"tag-eco","26":"tag-eire","27":"tag-erep","28":"tag-fin","29":"tag-fins","30":"tag-gen","31":"tag-ie","32":"tag-infl","33":"tag-int","34":"tag-invbis","35":"tag-invm","36":"tag-invman","37":"tag-ireland","38":"tag-mce","39":"tag-namer","40":"tag-plcy","41":"tag-publ","42":"tag-sci","43":"tag-semi","44":"tag-sofent","45":"tag-sofw","46":"tag-sofw1","47":"tag-stx","48":"tag-swit","49":"tag-tech","50":"tag-technology","51":"tag-teeq","52":"tag-tmt","53":"tag-us
["GET
