The opening night of\u00a0The Smashing Pumpkins<\/a>\u2019 operatic reimagining of \u2018Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness\u2019 has taken place \u2013 watch footage below.<\/p>\n

As announced in March,\u00a0Billy Corgan<\/a>\u00a0and co. have\u00a0taken over the Lyric Opera House in their Chicago hometown for seven nights<\/a>, which will see the band joined by the venue\u2019s acclaimed 60-piece\u00a0house orchestra and chorus\u00a0for a \u201ccompletely new, sonic and visual experience\u201d.<\/p>\n

The first show went down last night (November 21), and the\u00a0performance was made up of 17 of the\u00a0album\u2019s\u00a028 tracks, all conducted by James Lowe. There are six remaining performances to come this week, with the final night taking place on November 30.<\/p>\n

Yesterday also saw\u00a0the 30th\u00a0anniversary deluxe reissue of \u2018Mellon Collie\u2019<\/a>, which included a 6LP package that offers over 80 minutes of unreleased audio from the album\u2019s accompanying 1996 tour, a hardbound book with new liner notes from Corgan, a custom tarot card set and seven frameable lithographs.<\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0NME\u00a0back in February, Corgan touched on \u2018Mellon Collie\u2019 turning 30<\/a>\u00a0and hinted at an upcoming special edition, saying they were \u201cworking with the parent label\u201d to make it happen. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0weird because I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0believe\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0been 30 years.\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0really excited, but at the same time,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0like \u2018What happened over these last 30 years?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere,\u00a0Corgan recently said that former Pumpkins bassist D\u2019Arcy Wretzky\u2019s contributions to the band had \u201ca lot to do with\u201d their success<\/a>, despite their long-running public feud.<\/p>\n

After Wretzky left the band in 1999, she was briefly replaced by former Hole <\/a>bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur<\/a>, and\u00a0she has just announced the release of her memoir<\/a>,\u00a0Even\u00a0The\u00a0Good Girls Will Cry.
