{"id":196621,"date":"2025-11-23T21:37:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-23T21:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/196621\/"},"modified":"2025-11-23T21:37:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-23T21:37:09","slug":"activist-and-artist-margaretta-darcy-dies-aged-91-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/196621\/","title":{"rendered":"Activist and artist Margaretta D\u2019Arcy dies aged 91 \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tributes have been paid to the activist and artist Margaretta D\u2019Arcy who died at the age of 91 on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A long-time anti-war protester, she was involved with the Greenham Common campaign, a British anti-nuclear movement which opposed bringing cruise missiles into Europe, and the Committee of 100 group, a British anti-war campaign set up by philosopher Bertrand Russell and others. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">D\u2019Arcy supported the Shell to Sea campaign in Co Mayo and was involved in the protests at Shannon Airport in 2014 over the opposition to the US military\u2019s use of the airport. She was found guilty of illegal incursion on a runway and received a suspended three-month sentence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She refused to sign a bond to uphold the law and stay away from unauthorised zones at Shannon Airport, her sentence was reactivated and she served 9\u00bd weeks at Limerick Prison and the D\u00f3chas Centre at Mountjoy Prison.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She wrote a number of books including Tell Them Everything, Ireland\u2019s Guant\u00e1namo Granny and Awkward Corners, and plays such as Women\u2019s Voices from West of Ireland and Prison-voice of Countess Markievicz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Born in London, she was raised in Ireland. Photograph: Nick Bradshaw\/The Irish Times <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">D\u2019Arcy and Arden lived in Galway and she was a member of the Aosd\u00e1na, the Irish academy of artists. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In 2024, she was one of the oldest candidates to run in the local elections for Galway City Council as an independent candidate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She told The Irish Times at the time, that she felt it was her year to put her \u201chat in the ring\u201d after years of activism. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her campaign slogan was \u201cmad, bad and dangerous\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">D\u2019Arcy had been approached to run by Sentient Rights Ireland, which advocates for animal rights, human rights and the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At first she said no, but after reading Paul Gillespie\u2019s article titled \u201cOverworked, older and mostly male: Ireland has Europe\u2019s weakest local government\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2024\/04\/13\/overworked-older-and-mostly-male-ireland-has-europes-weakest-local-government\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in The Irish Times<\/a> she changed her mind and said: \u201cI\u2019ll do my bit for women and diversity,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/books\/ireland-s-guantanamo-granny-by-margaretta-d-arcy-innocence-in-pursuit-of-sanity-1.2575306\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ireland\u2019s Guantanamo Granny by Margaretta D\u2019Arcy: Innocence in pursuit of sanityOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Until last month, D\u2019Arcy was a regular presence at the monthly Shannonwatch Peace Vigil at the airport entrance and a few weeks ago, she was distributing leaflets in favour of the Triple Lock, said the Galway Alliance Against War group in a statement on her death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe in the Galway Alliance Against War feel privileged to have had Margaretta in our ranks for so many years,\u201d the statement said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShe stands as an outstanding example of a life fully and purposefully lived, dedicated to a future free from wars of profit and power, and to a world that cherishes all its children equally. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMargaretta\u2019s death is a great loss to our movement. Our deepest sympathy goes to her family and friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Reacting to the news on social media, Sin\u00e9ad Gibney TD, a former chief commissioner of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, said she was \u201cdeeply saddening to hear of the passing of Margaretta D\u2019Arcy today\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMargaretta always fearlessly and unapologetically stood up for peace and justice in this world. Her voice will be dearly missed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign, meanwhile, said D\u2019Arcy was D\u2019Arcy was a \u201cfierce, fearless artist and anti-war activist.
