The\u00a0ChatGPT<\/a> mobile app is\u00a0reportedly earning more than six times as much revenue as it did last year.<\/p>\n

The artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot app for\u00a0iOS<\/a> and\u00a0Android<\/a>\u00a0devices has made\u00a0$1.35 billion this year, through July, up from the $174 million it made during the same seven-month period in 2024, TechCrunch\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0Friday (Aug. 15), citing data from\u00a0Appfigures<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The second-ranked app in this category,\u00a0Grok<\/a>, has made $25.6 million so far this year, according to the report.<\/p>\n

The report noted that these figures include only the spending of consumers who paid for these AI assistants via a mobile app store; they do not include subscriptions on the web or the AI companies\u2019 other sources of revenue, the report said.<\/p>\n

In addition, Grok only became available in dedicated apps in January for\u00a0iOS<\/a>\u00a0and in March for\u00a0Android<\/a>, per the report. Before that, it was accessible only through the social media platform\u00a0X<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When announcing the launch of the first Grok standalone app,\u00a0xAI<\/a> highlighted features like image generation; real-time information powered by its access to current data from the web and X; an \u201cengaging and humorous\u201d conversational tone; and a focus on privacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet answers to any question, generate striking images, and upload pictures to gain a deeper understanding of your world,\u201d the company said at the time.<\/p>\n

The ChatGPT app was launched in May 2023. When\u00a0OpenAI<\/a> began rolling out its\u00a0AI assistant<\/a> mobile apps at that time, it said in a blog post: \u201cSince the release of ChatGPT, we\u2019ve heard from users that they love using ChatGPT on the go.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was reported Tuesday (Aug. 12) that xAI owner\u00a0Elon Musk<\/a> is threatening to sue\u00a0Apple<\/a> over the way it ranks\u00a0AI firms<\/a> in its App Store.<\/p>\n

As of that time, ChatGPT was the No. 1 free app in the App Store, while Grok was sitting in the No. 6 position.<\/p>\n
