That compared to 3 per cent growth in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The pretax loss of \u20ac20.1 million followed a pretax profit of \u20ac16.82 million in 2023 \u2013 a negative swing of \u20ac36.92 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In their report, the directors said \u201cthe reduction in profit reflects the company\u2019s resolute focus on putting colleagues and customers before profits\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe company made substantial investments to keep prices low for customers, in addition to further investment in staffing and remuneration,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The period under review \u201cwas another year of growth and investment in which the company made progress in line with its long term strategy,\u201d the directors added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The directors state that the company invested \u20ac92 million to improve and increase the company\u2019s store and distribution network, resulting in the opening of two new stores and this followed six store openings in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last month, Aldi opened its 165th store here with a new store in Monaghan and also served its one billionth customer here since arriving in Ireland in 1999.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The firm recorded an operating loss of \u20ac19.09 million. After tax, the firm recorded a loss of \u20ac21.18 million after a corporation tax charge of \u20ac1 million. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The loss also takes account of non-cash depreciation costs of \u20ac36 million and lease rental charges of \u20ac18.28 million. The firm recorded gains of \u20ac7.3 million from foreign exchange differences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the end of December 2024, the company had shareholder funds of \u20ac807 million including accumulated profits of \u20ac307 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company\u2019s cash funds reduced from \u20ac26.67 million to \u20ac17.8 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The directors state that \u201cthey believe the company\u2019s strong financial position will help support future growth of the business\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The most recent figures from Worldpanel by Numerator show that Aldi had a 11.4pc market share of the grocery market here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Numbers employed by Aldi Ireland increased by 89 from 4,680 to 4,769 as staff costs rose 12pc from \u20ac196.79 million to \u20ac221.24 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Directors\u2019 pay declined marginally to \u20ac1.8 million made up of \u20ac1.66 million in aggregate emoluments and \u20ac138,000 in pension contributions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Irish arm of discount retailer Aldi recorded a pretax loss of \u20ac20.1 million last year.
