{"id":202417,"date":"2025-11-27T05:04:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T05:04:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/202417\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T05:04:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T05:04:15","slug":"russia-rules-out-compromise-on-key-war-aims-while-eu-warns-against-carving-up-ukraine-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/202417\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia rules out compromise on key war aims while EU warns against \u2018carving up\u2019 Ukraine \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/russia\/\">Russia <\/a>has said it will not budge on key demands in any talks to end its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ukraine-crisis\/\">war with Ukraine<\/a>, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\/\">European Union<\/a> warned that the renewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/us\/\">US<\/a> push for peace must not lead to the \u201ccarving up\u201d of the embattled country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> White House envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to travel to Moscow for talks on US-backed peace proposals next week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/11\/26\/leaked-audio-reveals-us-envoy-coached-putin-aide-on-talking-to-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/us\/2025\/11\/26\/leaked-audio-reveals-us-envoy-coached-putin-aide-on-talking-to-trump\/\">despite revelations that he advised senior Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov<\/a> last month on how best to pitch ideas for Ukraine to US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Trump has claimed that a peace deal is now \u201cvery close\u201d and Ukrainian and European officials welcomed changes that they say were made to the initial 28-point US peace plan at talks in Geneva last Sunday \u2013 even as Russian officials backed the original document and warned that they would not accept revisions to important points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere can be no talk of any concessions or of abandoning our approaches to the key aspects of resolving the challenges that face us, including in the context of the SVO,\u201d Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Wednesday, referring to the \u201cspecial military operation\u201d \u2013 Moscow\u2019s term for its nearly four-year war with Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Russia was determined \u201cto achieve our stated goals, preferably through diplomatic means. If there are any setbacks, then we will continue to act within the framework of the SVO,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Ushakov said Russia had received US peace proposals \u201cunofficially\u201d and would review them with Mr Witkoff and other US officials in Moscow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have not discussed it with anyone yet, because the document truly requires serious analysis and discussion. While certain aspects can be viewed positively, much requires special discussion between experts,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Ushakov, a low-key but influential and highly experienced diplomat who advises Russian president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vladimir-putin\/\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> on foreign policy, found himself in the spotlight on Wednesday after Bloomberg published transcripts of two of his phone conversations with Mr Witkoff and Kirill Dmitriev, a leading figure in Russia\u2019s talks with Washington.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the calls, Mr Witkoff advises Mr Ushakov on how best to present proposals on Ukraine to Mr Trump, and Mr Dmitriev suggests \u201cinformally\u201d giving a paper stating Russia\u2019s position on Ukraine to Washington, in the hope that the US will use it \u201clike their own\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Critics of the original 28-point peace plan unveiled by the US last week said it did in fact resemble a Russian wish list on Ukraine, but Mr Dmitriev dismissed the report as \u201cfake\u201d and an attempt to derail peace efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Ushakov appeared to confirm that the conversations took place, however, saying that \u201csomeone is leaking, someone is eavesdropping, but not us &#8230; There are certain conversations on WhatsApp that, generally speaking, someone might somehow be able to listen to.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1761819953215-e257fabc-be80-4e46-b364-7af889213cbd.jpeg\"\/>&#8216;The world looks very different from here&#8217; &#8211; Denis Staunton&#8217;s global briefing<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">European leaders are demanding a role in discussions on Ukraine\u2019s future, while the Kremlin accuses them of trying to sabotage what it claims are the good-faith efforts of Mr Putin and Mr Trump to end the war and rebuild Russia-US relations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe first priority is that any agreement should deliver a just and lasting peace. And it should ensure real security for Ukraine and Europe &#8230; So Ukraine needs robust, long-term and credible security guarantees,\u201d EU Commission president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/ursula-von-der-leyen\/\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSecond priority \u2013 upholding Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty &#8230; So we need to be clear that there cannot be unilateral carving up of a sovereign European nation,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSovereignty also means being able to choose your own future. Ukraine has chosen a European destiny &#8230; Europe\u2019s future is bound to Ukraine\u2019s future.
