{"id":203240,"date":"2025-11-27T15:55:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T15:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/203240\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T15:55:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T15:55:16","slug":"microsoft-has-contributed-e4-9bn-to-irish-economy-over-past-year-report-finds-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/203240\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft has contributed \u20ac4.9bn to Irish economy over past year, report finds \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tech giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\">Microsoft<\/a>, together with its wider network, has contributed \u20ac4.9 billion to the Republic\u2019s economic output over the past year, according to a new report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\">The company established a presence in Dublin <\/a>in 1985 with a small manufacturing operation of fewer than 100 people. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\">the company <\/a>celebrates 40 years here, it has published a socio-economic impact report that shows it has contributed \u20ac40 billion to Ireland\u2019s economy over the past decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report, which was carried out by consultancy Indecon, shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/microsoft\/\">employment supported by the company <\/a>has grown by 340 per cent since 2014, while its annual contribution to economic output has increased by 380 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The company employs more than 6,400 people across its campus in Leopardstown, its data centre campus in Grange Castle, the entertainment group Activision Blizzard King, and LinkedIn\u2019s operations in Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It delivers a broad range of services, including research and development (R&amp;D), engineering, cloud services, and EMEA sales, as well as support functions, including financial and legal services, operations and logistics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report found that Microsoft helps sustain more than 20,000 jobs in the State through direct, indirect, and induced employment, up from 4,500 jobs a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>How AI is beginning to wreak havoc in the jobs market <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis increase shows how Microsoft, together with its wider network and partners, is strengthening Ireland\u2019s tech ecosystem, advancing Ireland\u2019s position as a leading technology hub, and creating opportunities across multiple sectors,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">To mark its 40 years here, Microsoft has committed an additional \u20ac4 million to artificial intelligence (AI) skilling initiatives here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe additional funding aims to unlock Ireland\u2019s AI opportunity by providing people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences with the opportunity to develop their AI fluency and digital skills, benefiting communities and businesses across the country,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis investment will also support the expansion of AI learning opportunities for young people through Microsoft Dream Space, which has already engaged over 500,000 students since 2018.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A new \u20ac1 million Dream Space hub at Grange Castle will provide \u201chands-on\u201d Stem [science, technology, engineering, and mathematics] and AI education for more than 5,000 students and hundreds of teachers here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The new hub will deliver a technically-focused curriculum, covering physical computing, electrical engineering and cloud operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report said the company has invested \u20ac1.8 billion in R&amp;D activities since 2014, with 1,600 current engineering roles focused on driving innovation.
