{"id":203727,"date":"2025-11-27T22:07:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-27T22:07:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/203727\/"},"modified":"2025-11-27T22:07:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-27T22:07:12","slug":"mother-of-former-conjoined-twins-hassan-and-hussein-benhaffaf-named-carer-of-the-year-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/203727\/","title":{"rendered":"Mother of former conjoined twins Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf named Carer of the Year \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A mother of formerly conjoined twins was named the Lidl Family Carer of the Year for 2025 by Family Carers Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a ceremony in the College Green Hotel, Dublin, on Thursday, Angie Benhaffaf, from Co Cork, received the title in recognition of the care she gives to her twin sons Hassan and Hussein.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At nearly 16 years old, the twins have faced lifelong medical challenges after they were born conjoined in 2009, sharing every organ except their hearts and one leg each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Accepting her award, she said she felt \u201cquite overwhelmed\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt truly means everything to me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She was nominated by her 18-year old daughter. \u201cThat was the overall prize for me, that she thought enough of me and thought me worthy enough to nominate me for such a special award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She dedicated the award to every carer in Ireland. \u201cIt\u2019s not an easy job to care for someone you love, but it\u2019s a very rewarding job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She described this year as one \u201cfull of highs and lows\u201d with several trips back and forth to hospital in Dublin and London. \u201cThere was just a lot going on medically, it\u2019s important to have these positive things to look forward to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Hassan and Hussein, in third year of secondary school, are award-winning para-athletes who have represented Ireland four times, receiving gold and silver medals in wheelchair basketball and athletics. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/education\/benhaffaf-twins-attend-first-day-of-primary-school-in-co-cork-1.2330643\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Benhaffaf twins attend first day of primary school in Co CorkOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Their mother described them as \u201ctypical teenage boys. They love their sports, they love their friends, and their gaming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIts such an honour to be their mum, and from day one, I always referred to them as a gift and they\u2019re still that very precious gift,\u201d said Ms Benhaffaf.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThey\u2019ve come through 75 surgeries now, all of which are ongoing. The strength and courage they forever show, inspire me.
