{"id":206096,"date":"2025-11-29T06:59:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-29T06:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/206096\/"},"modified":"2025-11-29T06:59:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-29T06:59:10","slug":"communications-union-seeks-meeting-over-proposed-job-losses-at-meta-contractor-covalen-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/206096\/","title":{"rendered":"Communications union seeks meeting over proposed job losses at Meta contractor Covalen \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/communications-workers-union-cwu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/communications-workers-union-cwu\/\">Communications Workers Union<\/a> (CWU) has written to management at Covalen, a major provider of content moderation services to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/facebook\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/facebook\/\">Facebook<\/a> parent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/meta\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/meta\/\">Meta<\/a>, seeking a meeting after the firm told staff on Thursday it is seeking about 400 redundancies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement, Covalen did not confirm that number but said itcould \u201cconfirm that it has commenced consultation with some of its staff in relation to potential redundancies within its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\">Dublin<\/a> operations\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cCovalen is engaging with the teams potentially impacted and is providing career planning advice and options for redeployment. All employees in scope have the full support of the Covalen\u2019s employee assistance programme. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cDemand changes in the business can be common and require scaling both up and down,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The move follows an announcement by Meta in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\/\">US<\/a> last month that it would shed some roles in the area of content moderation due to technological advances and the greater use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/artificial-intelligence\">AI<\/a> systems to carry out the work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">CWU deputy general secretary Ian McArdle described the announcement by Covalen as part of a \u201cripple effect\u201d arising out of Meta\u2019s move.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>If Irish households are so rich, why does it feel like an illusion?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He said staff at the company\u2019s operation in Sandyford were called to an \u201call hands\u201d meeting on Thursday where they were informed of the potential job losses. He said that while there had been some uncertainty in the wake of the Meta announcement and there is an acceptance that precise job numbers fluctuate at the firm, there was \u201cshock\u2019 at the scale of the potential job losses proposed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The union says staff were also told at the meeting that compensation for those made redundant would be limited to statutory redundancy, something he described as \u201cwholly unacceptable\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A lot of the staff at Covalen are international workers, a lot of them working here on visas and quite a few of them have recently renewed those visas at considerable cost. To make this announcement so close to Christmas is a callous act which has caused a huge amount of anxiety among the workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The 400 job losses would come from a workforce of about 2,000, he suggested. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Covalen is a subsidiary of the larger CPL, a major employer in Ireland. Covalen\u2019s accounts for 2024 show it has a turnover of \u20ac722 million and a net profit of \u20ac26.2 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Many of those likely to be impacted carry out annotation work, looking at and assessing online content.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThese are the gatekeepers for the internet, keeping it safe for the rest of us,\u201d said Mr McArdle, who described it as sometimes challenging work because of the nature of the some of the content under review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Though not recognised by the company for the purposes of collective bargaining, a group of about 60 of the union\u2019s members, legal operatives, have just voted for industrial action, up to and including strike action in a dispute related to grading.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In relation to the redundancy process, Mr McArdle said he hoped the company would \u201cdo the right thing and allow the union\u2019s involvement.
