{"id":208301,"date":"2025-11-30T16:44:20","date_gmt":"2025-11-30T16:44:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/208301\/"},"modified":"2025-11-30T16:44:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-30T16:44:20","slug":"boosting-one-protein-reawakens-aging-brain-cells-in-mice-study-shows-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/208301\/","title":{"rendered":"Boosting One Protein Reawakens Aging Brain Cells in Mice, Study Shows : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A discovery by researchers from the Baylor College of Medicine in the US could lead to treatments that clear the troublesome <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amyloid_beta\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aggregations of protein<\/a> thought to play a key role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alzheimer-s-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Using mice bred to have a condition similar to the neurodegenerative disorder, the team found that elevated levels of a protein called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SOX9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sox9<\/a> triggered specialized brain cells to go into clean-up overdrive, &#8216;vacuuming&#8217; up plaques with increased efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>In behavioral and memory tests, the treated mice also performed better, suggesting that the intervention can help protect the brain and reverse cognitive decline \u2013 a process that typically occurs in  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IaO\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73015\" data-postid=\"183244\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> disease as neurons are damaged and destroyed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/theres-one-critical-thing-you-can-do-to-keep-alzheimers-symptoms-at-bay\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">There&#8217;s One Critical Thing You Can Do to Keep Alzheimer&#8217;s Symptoms at Bay<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The researchers found that the benefits of Sox9 stemmed from increased expression of a receptor called MEGF10, exclusively expressed in the membranes of brain maintenance cells <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/brain-cells-we-thought-were-just-fillers-might-actually-be-the-key-to-our-body-clocks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">called astrocytes<\/a>, which are deployed to remove <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/one-of-our-biggest-hopes-for-alzheimers-treatment-doesnt-seem-to-work\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">amyloid-beta plaques<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Astrocytes perform diverse tasks that are essential for normal brain function, including facilitating brain communications and memory storage,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcm.edu\/news\/brain-stars-hold-the-power-to-preserve-cognitive-function-in-model-of-alzheimers-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> neuroscientist Dong-Joo Choi, previously at the Baylor College of Medicine and now at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the brain ages, astrocytes show profound functional alterations. However, the role these alterations play in aging and neurodegeneration is not yet understood.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/BrainScans.jpg\" alt=\"Mouse brain scan\" width=\"642\" height=\"269\" class=\"wp-image-183247 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Boosting the production of Sox9 (right) reduced plaques (in red) in mouse brains. (Choi et al., Nat. Neurosci., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>Some extra Sox9 seems to give the aging astrocytes a new lease on life, the researchers found. The Sox9 protein has <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.7759\/cureus.36129\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previously been found<\/a> elevated in Alzheimer&#8217;s brains, which may indicate the brain&#8217;s attempt to ramp up waste removal.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers tried an opposite experiment, too, genetically engineering mice to remove Sox9. In these animals, the astrocytes showed signs of reduced health, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/we-may-now-know-why-alzheimers-erases-memories-of-our-loved-ones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">memory recall worsened<\/a>, and more amyloid-beta clumps stacked up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An important point of our experimental design is that we worked with mouse models of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease that had already developed cognitive impairment, such as memory deficits, and had amyloid plaques in the brain,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcm.edu\/news\/brain-stars-hold-the-power-to-preserve-cognitive-function-in-model-of-alzheimers-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Choi.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe these models are more relevant to what we see in many patients with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease symptoms than other models in which these types of experiments are conducted before the plaques form.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are now tackling the challenge of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease from numerous different angles, including treatments that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/supplement-for-high-blood-pressure-clears-signs-of-alzheimers-in-mice\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">target amyloid-beta plaques<\/a>. However, not all of these <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/one-of-our-biggest-hopes-for-alzheimers-treatment-doesnt-seem-to-work\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">treatments work<\/a>, emphasizing the complexity of the disease.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are multiple ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-simple-new-compound-reverses-alzheimers-symptoms-in-rats\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clear out amyloid-beta clumps<\/a> or stop them from forming, but we&#8217;re still not sure if these protein aggregations are causing Alzheimer&#8217;s or just a result of the disease. All of these factors need to be weighed up by researchers.<\/p>\n<p>However, each new study gets us closer to understanding how this disease progresses \u2013 and how, eventually, it might be stopped.
