A 21-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of a police officer in Derry.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eoin Carlin, of Collon Lane in Derry, appeared at Dungannon Magistrates\u2019 Court this morning.<\/p>\n

He was arrested following an incident at Collon Lane on Thursday during which police were attacked with a hunting knife during an arrest operation.<\/p>\n

It was claimed in court, RT\u00c9 reports, that as officers moved in to make the arrest, the accused had produced the knife with a five inch blade from behind his back and lashed out.<\/p>\n

An attempt was made to stab one officer in his torso but he was saved by his body armour. The other sustained a gash to his left leg which required six stitches.<\/p>\n

A PSNI Detective Constable told the court she believed she could connect Carlin to the charges.<\/p>\n

She said the officer, who had been saved by his body armour, had remained on duty.<\/p>\n

She said he had described feeling the \u201cpressure\u201d of the knife make contact with his protective vest.<\/p>\n

The officer with the leg injury was currently incapacitated and recuperating at home, she said.<\/p>\n

As well as attempted murder, the accused also faced charges of wounding, possession of a weapon, assault and drugs offences.<\/p>\n

His solicitor told the court that his client had received treatment for mental health difficulties.<\/p>\n

He said his client had not realised for much of the incident that he was dealing with police.<\/p>\n

And he said he had enquired after the well-being of the two officers involved during police interview.<\/p>\n

There was no bail application.<\/p>\n

Carlin was remanded in custody to appear again in person at Derry courthouse on 18 December.<\/p>\n

Another man appeared in court yesterday on separate offences linked to the same incident.<\/p>\n
