Primal Scream<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Bobby Gillespie<\/a>\u00a0has shared\u00a0the\u00a0story of when he and Mani met\u00a0Joey Ramone<\/a>, describing it as \u201clike a scene from a movie\u201d.<\/p>\n

The singer\u00a0was writing on Instagram earlier today (November 30), just\u00a010 days\u00a0after the\u00a0iconic bassist \u2013 who was a member of Primal Scream from 1996 until 2011 \u2013\u00a0died at the age of 63<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As Gillespie recalled, the meeting with the\u00a0Ramones<\/a>\u00a0frontman\u00a0took place during the recording sessions for the band\u2019s 2000 album \u2018XTRMNTR\u2019, and specifically as they were\u00a0finishing off the psychedelic track \u2018When\u00a0The\u00a0Kingdom Comes\u2019, which would go on to be released as a B-side on the \u2018Accelerator\u2019 single.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019When The Kingdom Comes\u2019\u00a0was a Freakbeat style tune that we had fun with that Mani loved, in fact it was one of his\u00a0favourite\u00a0tracks that he did with us and was always pushing to have it in the live set,\u201d Gillespie wrote.<\/p>\n

Outlining that the song includes contributions from\u00a0Paul Weller<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0My Bloody Valentine<\/a>\u2019s Kevin Shields, he continued: \u201cWhilst we were mixing the song there was a knock at our studio door and I answered it only to find the one and only Joey Ramone @ramones standing there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI invited him in and introduced him to the band\u00a0\u2013\u00a0you\u00a0should have seen Mani\u2019s face\u00a0\u2013\u00a0for\u00a0once he had nothing to say\u00a0\u2013\u00a0him\u00a0and the others were all dumbstruck by Joey\u2019s presence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJoey listened to the track and said to us all that \u2018It\u2019s great to hear people still making REAL ROCK AND ROLL\u2019\u00a0\u2013 in\u00a0that inimitable Joey voice\u00a0\u2013\u00a0I\u00a0kid you\u00a0not! To be blessed by one of our heroes who inspired us to start our band was just such an amazing feeling.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0experiences like this that\u00a0makes\u00a0being in a band the best thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gillespie concluded: \u201cAfter Joey\u00a0left,\u00a0Mani was in heaven,\u00a0as we all were. It was like a scene from a Movie\u00a0\u2013\u00a0we\u00a0had no idea he was coming round\u00a0\u2013\u00a0total\u00a0surprise.\u00a0Creation\u2019s offices were round the corner & Alan McGee had sent Joey to see us\u00a0\u2013\u00a0turns\u00a0out he was a fan of the Scream. Good\u00a0times!\u201d<\/p>\n

Gary \u2018Mani\u2019\u00a0Mounfield\u00a0originally found fame as bassist for\u00a0The Stone Roses<\/a>, joining in 1987 and playing on both of their iconic studio albums. When they disbanded in 1996, he joined Primal Scream,\u00a0remaining\u00a0on board until the Roses reformed in 2011.<\/p>\n

Primal Scream initially shared a\u00a0picture\u00a0tribute to Mani on Instagram, while the band\u2019s bassist Simone Butler wrote: \u201cTruly in shock at this. An incredible loss to everyone who knew and loved him. The moment u met Mani u loved him. The most brilliant and wickedly sharp sense of\u00a0humour\u00a0and the biggest heart and generosity. The smile in\u00a0that\u00a0first pics was so absolutely him. He called me his\u00a0scorpio\u00a0bass sister. My heart is breaking for his boys,\u00a0family\u00a0and loved ones. Was meant to see him\u00a0tmro\u00a0in Manchester.<\/p>\n

\u201cA terrible and sad loss. An amazing person, so\u00a0so\u00a0loved by everyone all over the world X just heartbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

The band played at Manchester\u2019s Warehouse Project last weekend (November 22)\u00a0and paid tribute by performing \u2018I\u2019m Losing More Than I\u2019ll Ever Have\u2019 in his hometown<\/a>, in front of a huge\u00a0backdrop depicting the bassist.<\/p>\n

After Manchester United paid their own tribute to Mani<\/a>, Primal Scream responded with a message reading:\u00a0\u201cMani \u2026 Knighted by the terraces. Loved by everyone who ever knew or met him. He lit up our lives and funked up our\u00a0sound. A true punk and\u00a0working class\u00a0hero. His light shines on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others to have paid tribute to Mani since his passing include\u00a0Ian Brown<\/a>,\u00a0Oasis<\/a>,\u00a0Peter Hook<\/a>,\u00a0My Bloody Valentine<\/a>,\u00a0Richard Ashcroft<\/a> and\u00a0Zak Starkey<\/a>.<\/p>\n
