{"id":20939,"date":"2025-08-24T21:32:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-24T21:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/20939\/"},"modified":"2025-08-24T21:32:10","modified_gmt":"2025-08-24T21:32:10","slug":"record-highs-on-stock-markets-make-them-vulnerable-to-big-falls-analysts-warn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/20939\/","title":{"rendered":"Record highs on stock markets make them vulnerable to big falls, analysts warn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Australian share market has made history, surpassing 9,000 index points \u2014 a boon to millions of workers&#8217; super funds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A strong company profit reporting season, interest rate cuts and easing fears of global trade tensions have sent the market into record territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Working from her inner-city Sydney home, trader\u00a0Danielle Ecuyer rarely takes her eyes off the share market, keenly watching the factors driving it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So you&#8217;re talking to somebody who used to be a stockbroker, which is a really bad sign, and it&#8217;s called flicking on your phone and looking to what&#8217;s happened to US markets overnight,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And that&#8217;s because I&#8217;m a complete tragic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I used to do global emerging markets, so I&#8217;d check in every morning with what&#8217;s happened overseas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A woman with shoulder-length blonde hair, wearing a black jumper, looking at a laptop.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/2d0c8a40f892b4aa128533a158d2f5e9\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Danielle Ecuyer is a trader in Sydney. (ABC News: John Gunn)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Ecuyer has been looking at CSL&#8217;s recently published profit reports, and she has been watching the ASX&#8217;s biotech stalwart share price closely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a company that has consistently achieved earnings growth and invested for the future, and that&#8217;s what investors like,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The rapid rise in the Commonwealth Bank&#8217;s share price has also caught her attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Ecuyer said the stock&#8217;s success had been driven by lower interest rates \u2014 and the demand that has generated for the bank&#8217;s mortgage products, rising property prices, and reduced fears about global trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Many of those factors aren&#8217;t so much about the bank&#8217;s fundamentals improving that much,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s more to do with the fact that there&#8217;s been a weight of money coming into it, which has pushed the stock higher.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;Markets awash with cash<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Looking more broadly though, since 2008 central banks around the world have pumped trillions of dollars into the financial markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Relatively low interest rates have also produced record amounts of borrowing, or leverage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Fund manager Roger Montgomery said enormous amounts of liquidity, or credit, continued to slosh through global markets \u2014 a legacy of the central bank cash splash during the GFC and again during COVID &#8212; and it was all looking for a home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[Liquidity relates to] the ability to lend money,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So the ability to lend money has been going up and people are borrowing because that capacity is there, there&#8217;s less friction, they&#8217;re willing to take on risk.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man with short, dark hair and glasses sitting in front of a wide computer screen.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/8dbf8405aa828322f7bb9b5626f9e77f\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Fund manager Roger Montgomery says investors are currently willing to take on more risk. (ABC News: John Gunn)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And markets have been going up and that helps fuel that acceptance of risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So it&#8217;s &#8216;risk on&#8217; if you like.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But the recent stratospheric rise in the Commonwealth Bank&#8217;s share price represents too much risk for the Montgomery Fund.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s meant the fund has missed out on riding the big bull run in the stock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve been under-weight [the CBA] simply because the weighting of the banks is so high that it&#8217;s illogical or irrational,&#8221; Mr Montgomery said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Being underweight refers to a fund not owning as much of the stock as its actual weighting in the ASX 200 index.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For example, the CBA might have a 10 per cent weighting in the index, but a fund manager might only have 5 per cent of its portfolio invested in the bank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;You&#8217;ve got almost 25 or 27 per cent of the index in just four banks,&#8221; Mr Montgomery said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Now that is too high.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Disconnect opening up<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Stock market veteran Marcus Padley reckons the market&#8217;s irrational behaviour is best represented by CSL&#8217;s\u00a0big share plunge last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That&#8217;s a sign to me of the failure of fundamental analysis to be able to value a stock,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-08-05\/stock-market-how-the-investment-world-is-feeding-upon-itself\/105611838\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Why stock markets continue to defy gravity<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Stock markets are overcooked and operating dangerously close to the Sun, writes Ian Verrender.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a big disconnect that&#8217;s opened up I think now between company information and broker research, I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s research anymore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[The research] is only as up to date as the last company announcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It seems companies have given away the idea of a &#8216;confession season&#8217; and are now just prepared to dump six months of information on one day and not warn the market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That&#8217;s what&#8217;s going on with CSL.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Otherwise, they&#8217;re a very sensible, solid company.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The record run on the Australian stock market is perhaps best captured by the performance of superannuation \u2014 up more than 12 per cent over the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There are, of course, risks to the share market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They include trade-war induced global inflation, a US recession, geo-political risks, or some sort of Black Swan event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But most of the risks to financial markets, analysts say, are not locally based.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Padley said any big fall for the Australian share market would likely stem from a possible Wall Street crash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s anywhere from an 80 to 90 per cent correlation of our market with the US market,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A close up photo of the Wall St sign in New York City, symbolising the American stock market.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/aa0062df348d2fac228a2881b7a39e26\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Stock market veteran Marcus Padley says Wall Street will eventually tumble. (Reuters: Brendan McDermid)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;If there is a big fall in the US, it&#8217;s going to come from big tech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Our technology sector is 3 to 4 per cent of our market, so we&#8217;re reasonably well insulated from a drop [in the NASDAQ on Wall Street].<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But if there is a [broader] market drop in the US, we&#8217;ll inevitably follow suit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Will Wall Street tumble?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Montgomery thinks it&#8217;s not a matter of if Wall Street will tumble, but when.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I know in time it will all normalise again.
