{"id":20954,"date":"2025-08-24T21:40:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-24T21:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/20954\/"},"modified":"2025-08-24T21:40:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-24T21:40:11","slug":"tories-propose-banning-bus-passengers-from-playing-loud-music-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/20954\/","title":{"rendered":"Tories propose banning bus passengers from playing loud music \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bus passengers in the UK could be banned from playing loud music under proposals to change the law set out by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/conservative-and-unionist-party\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/conservative-and-unionist-party\/\">Tories<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Commuters on train journeys could also benefit from tougher enforcement of existing rules to tackle antisocial behaviour, the Conservatives said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Shadow transport secretary Richard Holden said passengers should not have to \u201cendure somebody else\u2019s choice of crap music\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Railway byelaws currently prohibit playing music \u201cto the annoyance of any person\u201d, but the Tories will seek to ensure operators properly enforce the rules in future legislation, with on-the-spot fines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Tories will also table changes to the Bus Services Bill currently going through parliament in London to extend similar protections to passengers on buses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Holden said: \u201cInconsiderate and obnoxious behaviour blights the lives of the travelling public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cTaking public transport shouldn\u2019t mean having to endure somebody else\u2019s choice of crap music blasted through a speaker at full blast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cRail passengers need to see enforcement and swift justice for those who make people\u2019s lives a misery and bus passengers need the same laws to protect them against this nuisance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Liberal Democrats have already pushed for similar action, calling for fines of up to \u00a31,000 (\u20ac1,150) for \u201cheadphone dodgers\u201d who play music out loud on buses and trains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At the time of the Lib Dem call in April, Tory leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kemi-badenoch\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kemi-badenoch\/\">Kemi Badenoch<\/a> expressed concern about how workable that would be, saying: \u201cI don\u2019t know whether many of the people who do those things could even afford to pay \u00a31,000 fines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m not sure whether it would work, we would have to look a little bit more at that, but I\u2019m very, very much against antisocial behaviour and I think that that\u2019s something that we could be looking more at.\u201d &#8211;
