Born in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/belfast\/\">Belfast<\/a> in 1918, Herzog spent his early childhood in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\">Dublin<\/a> when his father Issac Herzog was chief rabbi of Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He celebrated his bar mitzvah in Adelaide Road synagogue and was educated at Wesley College in Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/30\/plans-to-remove-name-of-former-israeli-president-from-dublin-park-suspended\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/30\/plans-to-remove-name-of-former-israeli-president-from-dublin-park-suspended\/\">Herzog Park<\/a> was named in 1995 in  his honour, recognising the former Israeli president\u2019s local roots. He died in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Where is Herzog Park?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Herzog Park is located in Rathgar, in an area that has long been at the centre of Jewish life in Dublin. It is close to the only Jewish school in the country, Stratford College. The coeducational fee-paying school was founded in 1954 and stands on the junction of Zion Road and Orwell Road. <\/p>\n<p>Is anything else in Dublin named after the Herzogs?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As the only higher-level institution teaching Jewish Studies in Ireland, Trinity College Dublin established the Herzog Centre in honour of Issac Herzog\u2019s legacy. The centre was founded to facilitate the engagement of students and the Irish public with Jewish and Near Eastern history and culture through academic programmes, public lectures and cultural events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Jewish Representative Council of Ireland is based in Herzog House, located beside the park and school in Rathgar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/12\/01\/chaim-herzog-yoni-wieder-chief-rabbi-park-dublin-city-council-name-removal\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chief Rabbi: Move to erase Chaim Herzog\u2019s name and history is cruel hammer blowOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p>Are the family politically involved today?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Herzog dynasty remains strong in Israel, with two of Chaim Herzog\u2019s sons having served in prominent political positions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/yitzhak-herzog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/yitzhak-herzog\">Yitzhak Herzog<\/a> is the current president of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a>, while older son Michael recently ended his term as Israeli ambassador to the US.<\/p>\n<p>Who suggested the park should be denamed?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A recommendation by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin-city-council\">Dublin City Council<\/a>\u2019s cross-party commemorations committee to remove the Herzog name from the park  is to be put to councillors for approval on Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The debate began last June, when a motion was submitted by Sinn F\u00e9in councillor Kourtney Kenny to rename the park Hind Rajab Park to commemorate a five-year-old Palestinian girl who was killed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-defence-forces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-defence-forces\">Israeli forces<\/a> on January 29th, 2024, along with six of her relatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last December councillors agreed the issue should be referred to the council\u2019s commemorations committee, who decided a consultation process should be undertaken to determine an appropriate new name.<\/p>\n<p>What is the argument for denaming?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Herzog\u2019s involvement with the Jewish paramilitary group Haganah and work for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/2024\/05\/15\/what-is-the-nakba\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/2024\/05\/15\/what-is-the-nakba\/\">Nakba<\/a> \u2013 the mass displacement of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war \u2013 form the basis of the argument.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Herzog joined Haganah in 1936, an underground military organisation from 1920-1948 which later became the army of the state of Israel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In 1948, Chaim Herzog worked for the IDF in the Arab-Israeli war in an integral intelligence capacity. From there, he rose through the IDF\u2019s military ranks until his retirement from active duty in 1962.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was later appointed military governor of the West Bank upon its capture by Israel in 1967.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Herzog Park in Rathgar. Photograph: Stephen Collins\/Collins Photos What has the response to the renaming proposal been?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There has been strong backlash against the proposal from members of Ireland\u2019s Jewish community and Government. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Chief Rabbi Yoni Wieder said removing the name \u201cHerzog\u201d from the park would be a shameful erasure of Irish\u2013Jewish history. Former minister for justice, Alan Shatter, weighed in labelling Dublin City Council \u201cfull-on Nazi\u201d over the proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin said on Sunday that the proposal to rename Herzog Park \u201cshould be withdrawn in its entirety and not proceeded with\u201d, while T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris described it as \u201cwrong\u201d and \u201coffensive\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Will it go ahead?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Plans to dename the park are to be suspended following a weekend of national and international pressure on Dublin City Council. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Sunday evening, council chief executive Richard Shakespeare said he was proposing to withdraw the item from Monday\u2019s agenda and refer it back to the commemorations committee, because the correct legislative procedures had not been followed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, the issue will be addressed at the start of Monday\u2019s council meeting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Who was Chaim Herzog and why is a park in Dublin named after him?
