Mangal saved around 1,000 pounds ($1,323) a month when he lived with his father and now regularly saves up to 1,400 pounds. Having built a six-figure net worth, he says he\u2019s on track to retire in his 50s.<\/p>\n<p>While the rising cost of living has driven many young people to do as Mangal did, he cites his father\u2019s own challenges getting on the property ladder as his inspiration to save. &#8220;I thought I&#8217;d never want to be in a position where I wouldn&#8217;t be able to afford a house,\u201d he says. In Korea \u2014 where the percentage skews higher, at 78% \u2014 these young people are collectively referred to as the \u201cKangaroo Tribe,\u201d so called because they have yet to leave their parents\u2019 home, or pouch. In the U.S., where the average is 46%, they\u2019re dubbed \u201c<a data-testid=\"Link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/three-tips-parents-boomerang-kids-who-move-back-home-2024-05-29\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/three-tips-parents-boomerang-kids-who-move-back-home-2024-05-29\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" target=\"_blank\">boomerang kids<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hwang Hyeon-dong has a meal with his father and grandmother at the family home in Guri, South Korea. REUTERS\/Kim Hong-Ii <\/p>\n<p>Alex King, founder of the London-based financial education company Generation Money, says that although living at home has become more normalized as a way of supercharging savings, it\u2019s not without risk. &#8220;A lot of people have a plan to maybe live with their parents for a couple of years, save some money to then move out again or try and buy somewhere,\u201d he says. \u201cBut suddenly, once you are saving that money, it&#8217;s very difficult to then just give up that lifestyle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Takeaways<\/b><\/p>\n<ul class=\"article-list-module__unordered__aLEL9 article-list-module__disc__XcBxE article-body-module__paragraph__Ts-yF article-body-module__list__G8QPC\" role=\"list\" data-testid=\"unordered-0\">\n<li><b>Consistency matters when it comes to saving<\/b>. &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t matter how much you have,\u201d Mangal says. \u201cJust having the mindset at the very beginning that you&#8217;re going to be consistent and stick it through, I think, is the biggest thing.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Balance is important<\/b>. While saving aggressively helped Mangal reach his goals, he\u2019s since made sure to enjoy himself, too. &#8220;I don&#8217;t want to look back and then think, a whole decade I was living like this when I didn&#8217;t really have to be as intense.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><b>Beware of lifestyle creep. <\/b>King cautions against getting too used to the lifestyle and luxuries of living at home with parents, noting that the transition to paying rent or a mortgage will take getting used to.<\/li>\n<li><b>Take a load off your parents<\/b>. Try to contribute in some way, with groceries or utilities.
