For now, anyone can download, run and even tweak Grok, whose source code was uploaded to the <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/huggingface.co\/xai-org\/grok-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Hugging Face platform;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Hugging Face platform<\/a>. However, there are restrictions to xAI&#8217;s open-source license, which doesn&#8217;t let people use Grok to train, create or improve other AI models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 engadget-charcoal\">It&#8217;s not the first time xAI has made its models available to the public. In March 2024, the company released the raw base model of <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/xai-org\/grok-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Grok-1;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Grok-1<\/a>, which isn&#8217;t finetuned for any specific task. As xAI continues to make Grok more accessible, it&#8217;s a stark contrast to OpenAI, which has only offered less powerful models of its <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/05\/technology\/openai-artificial-intelligence-chatgpt.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:ChatGPT model;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:5;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">ChatGPT model<\/a> to researchers and businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 engadget-charcoal\">Making Grok open source allows independent developers to potentially improve on the AI model, but xAI is still trying to move past an extremely alarming episode of Grok providing antisemitic responses and referencing itself as <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai\/how-exactly-did-grok-go-full-mechahitler-151020144.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:MechaHitler;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:6;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MechaHitler<\/a>. The Grok team attributed the incident to &#8220;<a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai\/grok-team-apologizes-for-the-chatbots-horrific-behavior-and-blames-mechahitler-on-a-bad-update-184520189.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:deprecated code;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:7;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deprecated code<\/a>&#8221; that has since been fixed.
