{"id":210816,"date":"2025-12-02T04:55:10","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T04:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/210816\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T04:55:10","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T04:55:10","slug":"harris-links-housing-lack-to-immigration-in-visit-to-cork","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/210816\/","title":{"rendered":"Harris links housing lack to immigration in visit to Cork"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">T\u00e1naiste Simon Harris has said that while he does not wish \u201cto be in any way divisive\u201d, there is a correspondence between national homelessness figures and immigration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Mr Harris was speaking to  The Echo on Friday in Macroom, after record-breaking homelessness figures showed 16,766 people \u2014 11,492 adults and 5,274 children \u2014 were in emergency accommodation at the end of October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The T\u00e1naiste defended the Government\u2019s housing policies, but accepted that homelessness is \u201cat an unacceptably high level, and there is a housing emergency in Ireland\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Citing new measures in the revised National Housing Plan that relate to child and family homelessness, Mr Harris said while more social housing was now being provided than at any time since the 1970s, homelessness was still increasing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cIn the new housing plan is a request for local authorities to look at the allocation priorities for their social-housing schemes, particularly to target children and families in homelessness,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cSecondly, we\u2019ve also brought in a new fund to allow the local authorities to purchase homes to take families off the homelessness list.
