{"id":211856,"date":"2025-12-02T19:21:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T19:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/211856\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T19:21:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T19:21:17","slug":"consumers-warned-over-prices-as-inflation-could-stay-elevated-for-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/211856\/","title":{"rendered":"Consumers warned over prices as inflation could stay elevated for months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The claim comes after the annual rate of inflation spiked above 3pc in Ireland for the first time in two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Energy tariff increases and higher food prices have sent the annual rate of inflation up again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Prices are estimated to have risen by 3.2pc in the 12 months to November, the highest level since December 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">This is despite the fact that prices fell by 0.2pc when compared with October, according the Central Statistics Office (CSO).<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The latest increase in prices comes just after the October budget, when the Government insisted the worst of the price rises were behind us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The then-finance minister Paschal Donohoe said inflation had \u201cnormalised\u201d, and he expected an inflation rate of around 2pc in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">He said this was why there had been no repeat of last year\u2019s once-off cost-of-living measures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">There were no tax adjustments in the budget to stop people paying more of their income in tax due to inflation and pay rises.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The CSO said the \u201cflash\u201d estimate for inflation in November came from what is called the European Union harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP). This index does not account for mortgage costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The overall rate of inflation has been creeping back up in recent months, putting huge pressure on household budgets in the run-up to Christmas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Energy prices are estimated to have grown by 0.7pc in November, and rose by 3.3pc over the last year. Bord G\u00e1is Energy, Energia, Pinergy and SSE Airtricity all increased electricity prices last month. Flogas raised its electricity prices in August.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop5 indo-26838ee5_paddingbottom3 indo-26838ee5_paddingleft7 indo-26838ee5_paddingright5 indo-26838ee5_paddingtop3 indo-b184cee3_openquote\" style=\"border-left-color:var(--color-primary-base);border-left-style:solid;border-left-width:0\" data-testid=\"inline-quote\">\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-91174671_secondary indo-66f0fec7_medium indo-1d70522a_marginbottom0\" style=\"color:var(--color-black-base)\">\u201cInflation could stay at around 3pc for a few months, maybe six months<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Food prices are estimated to be unchanged in the month but they increased by 4.2pc in the last 12 months, according to the CSO\u2019s \u201cflash\u201d estimate of \u00adinflation from the EU HICP for November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Economist Dan O\u2019Brien said Ireland\u2019s annual rate of inflation had gone above 3pc for the first time in two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">He said stubbornly high services-price inflation and higher-than-EU-average food-price inflation were behind price rises. Mr O\u2019Brien, who is the chief economist at the Institute of International and European Affairs in Dublin and a senior fellow at UCD, said it could take months for inflation to ease back.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cInflation could stay at around 3pc for a few months, maybe six months,\u201d he said. But he added that inflation is unlikely to hit 5pc as the economy was \u201csoftening\u201d, while prices in Ireland were likely to converge with those across the EU over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Statistician Anthony Dawson said: \u201cThe latest flash estimate of the HICP, compiled by the CSO, indicates that prices for consumer goods and services in Ireland are estimated to have increased by 3.2pc in the past year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">He said transport costs had grown by 0.1pc in the month and rose by 3pc in the 12 months to November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Petrol and diesel prices went up due to the imposition of carbon tax in October\u2019s budget.
