{"id":214407,"date":"2025-12-04T04:33:13","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T04:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/214407\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T04:33:13","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T04:33:13","slug":"nick-kent-design-designs-bondi-house-as-steel-framed-kit-of-parts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/214407\/","title":{"rendered":"Nick Kent Design designs Bondi House as steel-framed &#8220;kit of parts&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Translucent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/polycarbonate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">polycarbonate<\/a> screens and metal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/louvres\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">louvres<\/a> create a play of light and shadow throughout this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/minimalist-architecture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">minimalist<\/a> house in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/sydney\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sydney<\/a>, Australia, designed by local studio Nick Kent Design.<\/p>\n<p>Named Bondi House after its location close to Bondi Beach, the two-storey, two-bedroom dwelling replaces a derelict building on a long and narrow plot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2276011 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/bondi-house-nick-kent-architecture-residential-sydney-australia_dezeen_2364_col_11-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Bondi House by Nick Kent\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Nick Kent Design designed Bondi House as a &#8220;kit of parts&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The home has a lightweight, steel-framed structure, created from what Nick Kent Design called a &#8220;kit of parts&#8221;, which is painted white and clad in a mixture of translucent and reflective surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>This frame means both the internal and external walls are non-load-bearing, allowing for the home to be easily reconfigured in future or used as a prototype and adapted for different sites.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2276008 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/bondi-house-nick-kent-architecture-residential-sydney-australia_dezeen_2364_col_8-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Dining room with sliding doors\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It has a lightweight steel frame that can be reconfigured<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We deliberately constrained ourselves with a limited &#8216;kit of parts&#8217; that were used repetitively throughout the building to create as rich an experience as possible,&#8221; studio founder Nick Kent told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Materials suited to the play of light and shadows \u2013 a combination of transparent, translucent and reflective surfaces \u2013 mediate and engage with the site&#8217;s natural environment, while achieving privacy from adjacent neighbours.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2276023 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/bondi-house-nick-kent-architecture-residential-sydney-australia_dezeen_2364_col_23-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Bondi House by Nick Kent\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The living room is illuminated by a wall of polycarbonate<\/p>\n<p>Using the depth of the plot, the home was set back at both the front and back, buffering it from the busy street and maximising space for a rear garden, which has been planted with indigenous species.<\/p>\n<p>Behind a frontage of stainless steel garage doors, a corridor leads past a bathroom into the central living room, which is illuminated by a wall of translucent polycarbonate and overlooked by the home&#8217;s white-steel staircase.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/19\/hedge-and-arbour-house-studio-bright-melbourne\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/sq-hedge-and-arbour-house-studio-bright-melbourne_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"Hedge and Arbour House by Studio Bright\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Studio Bright shades Melbourne home with metal screens for climbing plants\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the adjacent kitchen and dining area, the same polycarbonate panels have been used behind the metal kitchen counters, opposite a corner of full-height sliding glass doors that lead out into the rear garden.<\/p>\n<p>External roller blinds provide additional shading to the ground floor when needed, while above, the first-floor bedrooms have been wrapped in adjustable aluminium louvres.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2276002 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/bondi-house-nick-kent-architecture-residential-sydney-australia_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"White-steel staircase\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>There is a sculptural white-steel staircase<\/p>\n<p>A skylit hallway on the first floor leads to the front of Bondi House, where a study space extends into a projecting balcony overlooking the street.
