The \u200bhead of an armed Palestinian faction that opposes Hamas<\/a> in Gaza<\/a> has been killed, Israel<\/a>\u2019s public broadcaster \u200dreported on Thursday, in what would be a blow to Israeli efforts to support Palestinian clans against the \u200dIslamist movement.<\/p>\n

Yasser Abu Shabab<\/a>, a Bedouin tribal leader based in Israeli-held Rafah in southern Gaza, has led the most prominent of several small anti-Hamas groups that have emerged in Gaza during the \u200cwar <\/a>that began more than two years ago.<\/p>\n

Hamas has branded him a collaborator and has \u2060ordered its fighters to kill or capture him.<\/p>\n

There was no immediate word \u200cabout \u200bAbu \u200dShabab\u2019s status on the Facebook page of his group, the Popular Forces.<\/p>\n

Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu<\/a> acknowledged in June Israel had armed anti-Hamas clans, though Israel has announced few other details of the \u2060policy since then.<\/p>\n

Mr Abu Shabab\u2019s death was reported by Israeli media including Kan, Israel\u2019s \u2060public broadcaster, citing a security source.<\/p>\n

Israel\u2019s Army \u2060Radio, also citing a security source, said he had died in Soroka hospital in southern Israel of unspecified wounds, but the \u200dhospital soon denied he had been admitted there.<\/p>\n

The reports did not say when he died or how he got his reported wounds.<\/p>\n

An Israeli government spokesperson declined to comment on the report. Hamas had no comment, its Gaza spokesperson said. Other Israeli authorities did not immediately make any comment.<\/p>\n

Mr Abu Shabab\u2019s group has denied being backed by Israel.<\/p>\n

It has \u200ccontinued to operate in \u200careas controlled by Israeli forces since a US-backed ceasefire was agreed in October.<\/p>\n
