The women behind Wuthering Heights<\/a> are thinking big, and we\u2019re not just talking about Jacob Elordi\u2019s size. Director Emerald Fennell began conversations about the film by telling star and producer Margot Robbie, \u201c\u2018I want this to be this generation\u2019s Titanic<\/a>.\u2019\u201d Yes, that Titanic, the one that has made over $2 billion since debuting in theaters in 1997. Robbie recalled Fennell\u2019s aspirations for a gothic, seductive Bront\u00eb adaptation\u00a0in a December 4 interview with British Vogue.<\/a> \u201c\u2018I went to the cinema to watch [Baz Luhrmann\u2019s] Romeo + Juliet eight times and I was on the ground crying when I wasn\u2019t allowed to go back for a ninth,\u2019\u201d Robbie quoted the Saltburn director. \u201c\u2018I want it to be that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The comparisons to both sexy \u201990s romantic dramas would point to Elordi being their Leonardo DiCaprio, but Robbie has a loftier analog. \u201cI honestly think he\u2019s our generation\u2019s Daniel Day-Lewis,\u201d she said of her Heathcliff, the book\u2019s hulking, depressed, dashing love interest. The casting has stirred up debate<\/a> because book readers have interpreted the character as a person of color due to Emily Bront\u00eb\u2019s description of him as a \u201cdark-skinned gypsy.\u201d Robbie did not directly address the controversy, but she defended Elordi and emphasized the traditional (white) leading men cast before him. \u201cI saw him play Heathcliff,\u201d she told Vogue. \u201cAnd he is Heathcliff. I\u2019d say, just wait. Trust me, you\u2019ll be happy. It\u2019s a character that has this lineage of other great actors who\u2019ve played him, from Laurence Olivier to Richard Burton and Ralph Fiennes to Tom Hardy.\u201d Wuthering Heights has great expectations to live up to.<\/p>\n
