{"id":216184,"date":"2025-12-05T04:14:17","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T04:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/216184\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T04:14:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T04:14:17","slug":"arianegroup-receives-rear-heat-shield-mock-up-for-exomars-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/216184\/","title":{"rendered":"ArianeGroup Receives Rear Heat Shield Mock-Up for ExoMars Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/ArianeGroup-Receives-Rear-Heat-Shield-Mock-Up-for-ExoMars-Mission.webp.webp\" alt=\"Loiretech has delivered a rear heat shield mock-up for ESA\u2019s ExoMars mission to ArianeGroup, where it will be used for initial testing of the thermal protection system.\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5690 lazyload\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/500;\"\/>Credit: Loiretech<\/p>\n<p>French tooling manufacturer Loiretech has delivered a second component of a mock-up of the ExoMars heat shield to ArianeGroup\u2019s facilities in Saint-M\u00e9dard-en-Jalles.<\/p>\n<p>The development of the European Space Agency\u2019s (ESA) revised ExoMars mission, which will deliver the Rosalind Franklin rover to the surface of the Red Planet, is being led by Thales Alenia Space under <a href=\"https:\/\/europeanspaceflight.com\/esa-awards-e522m-exomars-2028-contract-to-thales-alenia-space\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a \u20ac522 million contract<\/a> awarded in April 2024. ArianeGroup is part of the industrial team and is responsible for several elements of the mission\u2019s thermal protection system, which will be essential for ensuring the spacecraft survives its entry into the Martian atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>On 2 December, Loiretech announced that it had delivered a full-scale mock-up of the rear heat shield structure to ArianeGroup. This is the second component mock-up the company has produced for ArianeGroup, following the <a href=\"https:\/\/europeanspaceflight.com\/arianegroup-receives-heat-shield-mock-up-for-exomars-mission\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">delivery of a front heat shield mock-up in July<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both mock-ups will have a cork-based ablative thermal protection material, known as Norcoat\u00ae Li\u00e8ge, applied to their surfaces for the initial qualification of the ExoMars thermal protection system.<\/p>\n<p>In July, ArianeGroup ExoMars Programme Manager J\u00e9r\u00f4me Bertrand confirmed that while Loiretech had been tapped to produce the mock-up for the initial testing, the company would not be responsible for the flight-ready models.<\/p>\n<p>Following the ESA Ministerial Council meeting in Bremen last month, the director of the agency\u2019s Human and Robotic Exploration programme, Daniel Neuenschwander, confirmed that despite a funding shortfall for the programme, ExoMars had received the commitments it needs. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher has also confirmed NASA contributions to the mission, which include launch services, a braking engine, and radioisotope heater units.
