{"id":217252,"date":"2025-12-05T18:31:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T18:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/217252\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T18:31:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T18:31:11","slug":"dublin-drainage-project-to-move-forward-after-court-challenge-settled-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/217252\/","title":{"rendered":"Dublin drainage project to move forward after court challenge settled \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Greater Dublin Drainage project, seen as a key piece of infrastructure enabling house building and growth in the capital, is to move forward after a judicial review was settled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/uisce-eireann\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/uisce-eireann\/\">Uisce \u00c9ireann<\/a>, the utility firm which manages the State\u2019s water infrastructure, confirmed on Friday that it had reached a settlement on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/high-court\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/high-court\/\">High Court<\/a> proceedings concerning aspects of the project. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The drainage project, which is to include a new treatment plant in Clonshaugh that will serve up to 500,000 people, was identified as necessary more than a decade ago. But the planned development has been beset by planning issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When it originally sought planning permission for the project in June 2018, Uisce \u00c9ireann it expected it would be complete and operational by 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The project, and the judicial review proceedings, were held up as an example by the government on how such developments can become bogged down in the courts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In a statement on Friday afternoon, the utility firm said: \u201cThe settlement was achieved following constructive engagement between all parties and avoids the need for a full court hearing. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAs part of the agreement Uisce \u00c9ireann committed to some additional measures, to further enhance public confidence in the environmental benefits of the project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/courts\/2025\/11\/29\/the-life-cycle-of-a-judicial-review-how-legal-and-planning-challenges-can-delay-a-key-dublin-project\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The life cycle of a judicial review: how legal and planning challenges have delayed a key Dublin projectOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Housing James Browne welcomed the news, saying it was positive for new homes in north Dublin and its surrounding areas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt is a major step forward in addressing wastewater infrastructure in Dublin, unlocking greater development potential by providing essential increased wastewater treatment capacity.
