That\u2019s because the iPhone maker has just released its new list of obsolete devices on its <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/102772\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/102772\" aria-label=\"support page\">support page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When an iPhone becomes obsolete, Apple will no longer support it with repairs or iOS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kateoflahertyuk\/2025\/11\/05\/ios-261-apple-just-gave-iphone-users-56-reasons-to-update-now\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kateoflahertyuk\/2025\/11\/05\/ios-261-apple-just-gave-iphone-users-56-reasons-to-update-now\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"security updates\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">security updates<\/a>. If your iPhone doesn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kateoflahertyuk\/2025\/07\/14\/ios-26-which-iphones-can-run-apples-new-software\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kateoflahertyuk\/2025\/07\/14\/ios-26-which-iphones-can-run-apples-new-software\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"run iOS 26\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">run iOS 26<\/a>, Apple is continuing to update iOS 18 for older devices. That means there is no reason to upgrade your iPhone.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you do want to update to iOS 26, you will need an eligible device. Note that there are notable devices missing from the list. Here\u2019s What To Do<\/p>\n<p>The first thing to do is to check if your iPhone is on the updated obsolete list. If it is, you should consider buying a new device. Those on the vintage list have a little longer to receive security updates, but note that your iPhone will need to be replaced within the next year or so.<\/p>\n<p>Obsolete devices see their free updates come to a halt, which puts them at risk of any future vulnerabilities, says Jake Moore, global cybersecurity advisor at ESET.<\/p>\n<p>He concedes that older devices are not as targeted as newer iPhones but warns that \u201conce a vulnerability is found by attackers, it can be rapidly exploited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is vital that iPhones are always kept up to date with the latest security updates, says Moore. \u201cWhile it may be frustrating for people using iPhones that are no longer offered updates, they should consider replacing them with a newer, more secure device.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you check family members\u2019 iPhones too \u2014 especially grandparents or kids who you might pass your iPhone on to, or who might not check their own devices.<\/p>\n<p>In these tough economic times, replacing an iPhone is no small task. But you don\u2019t have to buy the latest model.
