{"id":217575,"date":"2025-12-05T22:59:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-05T22:59:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/217575\/"},"modified":"2025-12-05T22:59:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-05T22:59:08","slug":"eurovision-fallout-over-israel-entry-potentially-leads-rte-down-slippery-slope-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/217575\/","title":{"rendered":"Eurovision fallout over Israel entry potentially leads RT\u00c9 down slippery slope \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\/\">RT\u00c9\u2019s<\/a> withdrawal from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eurovision\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/eurovision\/\">Eurovision 2026<\/a> came after the Swiss-based European Broadcasting Union cleared the way for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a> to take part in the song contest. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Irish declaration came as Spanish, Dutch and Slovenian national broadcasters said they too would boycott the Eurovision, although scores of others will proceed with the contest in Vienna on what will be its 70th anniversary. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">At issue is the huge civilian death toll from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-hamas-conflict\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel-hamas-conflict\/\">Israel\u2019s war on Gaza<\/a> which was set off by the surprise Hamas attack on Israel of October 7th, 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But when delegates of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the organiser of the Eurovision, gathered in Geneva on Thursday to discuss Israel\u2019s participation, there was no vote on demands to exclude the country. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">They took a ballot instead to tighten voting rules, the aim being to set off any interference by governments or third parties to tilt the balance. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The ballot came after claims of Israeli interference in the public vote that carried the country\u2019s contestant, Yuval Raphael, to second place in Eurovision 2025. A vote on Israeli participation would have been taken if EBU measures to \u201creinforce trust\u201d were rejected. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Eurovision director Martin Green said he was \u201cpleased\u201d broadcasters had the opportunity for a debate, claiming the outcome reflected \u201ca belief that the Eurovision Song Contest shouldn\u2019t be used as political theatre\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Even though Russia was banned from the event after invading Ukraine almost four years ago, Green insisted that Eurovision \u201cmust retain some sense of neutrality\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/media\/2025\/12\/04\/rte-will-not-broadcast-next-eurovision-song-contest-due-to-israels-inclusion\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ireland among four countries to boycott Eurovision Song Contest due to Israel\u2019s inclusionOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It goes without saying that the row over Israel means the Eurovision is anything but a neutral forum for countries to compete only in song away from the political fray. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">RT\u00c9 made clear its view that participation \u201cremains unconscionable given the appalling loss of lives in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there which continues to put the lives of so many civilians at risk\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Still, civilian cost of the war was already clear when Ireland took its place alongside Israel in Eurovision 2025 and 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Among those calling for Israel\u2019s expulsion from the last contest was singer Charlie McGettigan, joint winner with Paul Harrington of Eurovision 1994 with \u201cRock \u2018n\u2019 Roll Kids\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI\u2019m very happy that RT\u00c9 have taken this stance &#8230; It\u2019s better late than never,\u201d McGettigan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOne of the things that annoys me here is that Israel has no remorse whatsoever for what they have done in Gaza,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">RT\u00c9 spent a little over \u20ac385,000 to take part Eurovision 2025 in Basel, Switzerland. That sum is regarded as far from inconsequential in the cash-strapped station but is hardly a game-changer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/2025\/12\/01\/chaim-herzog-yoni-wieder-chief-rabbi-park-dublin-city-council-name-removal\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chief Rabbi: Move to erase Chaim Herzog\u2019s name and history is cruel hammer blowOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But the broadcaster also stands to lose prospective premium advertising revenues if a putative Irish contestant made it through to the final.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">All told, the withdrawal is believed to be \u201ccost-neutral\u201d, although the cost of Eurovision participation had no bearing on the decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The move has also raised questions as to whether Eurovision sets a precedent, potentially leading RT\u00c9 down a slippery slope. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">For example, the next Summer Olympics take place in Los Angeles in 2028. Steadfast US support for Israel means Washington would never exclude the country from these Olympics. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">But would RT\u00c9 come under pressure to boycott the Games if there was a wave of pressure against Israeli participation? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI couldn\u2019t see how RT\u00c9 wouldn\u2019t broadcast the Olympics,\u201d said a senior Montrose figure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">All of this comes against the backdrop of sustained diplomatic tension between Ireland and Israel over the Gaza war. The move was suspended but it prompted claims by Gideon Saa\u2019r, Israeli foreign minister, that the Government and Irish institutions have an \u201canti-Semitic nature\u201d. Sa\u2019ar publicly clashed with Ireland\u2019s ambassador to Tel Aviv, Sonya McGuinness, who said the minister was \u201cill-informed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In the hours before RT\u00c9 quit Eurovision, human rights campaigners in the Irish Council for Civil Liberties made a complaint to regulators in the Data Protection Commission against Microsoft Ireland, for mass-processing \u201cillegal\u201d surveillance data on Palestinians by Israel\u2019s military. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Fractious exchanges within weeks of the war beginning have hardly stopped since. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Former Fine Gael minister Alan Shatter, a member of the Jewish community, accused RT\u00c9 of \u201cmoral bankruptcy\u201d on the Eurovision, saying it was responding to pressure. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cRT\u00c9 has basically bent the knee to extremist campaigners who want to boycott everything to do with Israel,\u201d Shatter said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThere\u2019s already a perspective internationally that the Irish State has an extraordinary level of hostility to Israel that goes beyond any reasonable critique of the Israeli government. I do not believe the Israeli government to be immune from criticism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He saw RT\u00c9\u2019s move as part of a pattern that includes the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) vote to submit a motion to Uefa to ban Israel from European soccer and concerns raised about Gaza by Basketball Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">As a condition of Government funding, Shatter said these organisations should be directed to \u201cstop meddling in politics\u201d and focus on their primary role. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s confirming an international perspective that Ireland is not merely exceptionally hostile towards Israel but that there is a problem of systemic anti-Semitism in Ireland,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Such claims meet a cold response in Government circles where claims of Ireland being anti-Semitic have been dismissed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Friday, the Taoiseach said he fully understood RTE\u2019s decision, saying it was \u201can act of solidarity\u201d with journalists killed in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In response to general Israeli criticism of Ireland, he said it was \u201cregrettable\u201d that Irish Government actions have been portrayed as being \u201canti-Israeli\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/media\/2025\/12\/04\/eurovision-organisers-set-to-consider-israel-participation-amid-boycott-threats\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eurovision organisers set to consider Israel participation amid boycott threatsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe are not anti-Israel. We want harmonisation between the people of Palestine and the people of Israel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Some overseas perceptions of the Irish Government\u2019s position on Israel were \u201cbeing weaponised against Ireland unnecessarily\u201d, said Mr Martin, speaking at the British-Irish Council in Wales. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe Israeli government tends to have a view that if you are not on their side, or if you don\u2019t take a position that they articulate, you are completely against [them],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe all know the situation is much more complex than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Welcoming the withdrawal from Eurovision, the RT\u00c9 Trade Union Group said: \u201cGiven Israel\u2019s continued denial of international media access and the ongoing genocide in Palestine, it is unconscionable that Ireland should participate in a musical contest with its representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The group represents several unions at the broadcaster including Siptu and the National Union of Journalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McGettigan rejected any suggestion that support for RT\u00c9\u2019s move or Israel\u2019s exclusion from Eurovision was anti-Semitic. \u201cI can say without any shadow of a doubt, I am not anti-Semitic,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI am not anti-Jewish people.
