{"id":217821,"date":"2025-12-06T02:19:14","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T02:19:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/217821\/"},"modified":"2025-12-06T02:19:14","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T02:19:14","slug":"nearly-half-population-now-reliant-on-private-health-insurance-as-claims-soar-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/217821\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly half population now reliant on private health insurance as claims soar \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nearly half the Irish population rely on private health insurance while the cost of private claims has risen by a third since the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">These were among the findings of new report on the extent of private health insurance in the Republic commissioned by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/insurance-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/insurance-ireland\/\">Insurance Ireland<\/a> from consulting firm Milliman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report found that 2.5 million people (46 per cent of the population) availed of private health insurance last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The value of claims covered by the four main players in the market \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vhi\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/vhi\/\">Vhi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/laya-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/laya-health\/\">Laya<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-life-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/irish-life-health\/\">Irish Life Health <\/a>and the recently launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/level-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/level-health\/\">Level Health<\/a> \u2013 has grown significantly, by 35 per cent in five years, rising from \u20ac2.25 billion in 2019 to \u20ac3.03 billion last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In 2024, more than one million treatments across a spectrum of categories \u2013 including orthopaedic, cancer, digestive, cardiac and genitourinary \u2013 benefiting more than 800,000 claimants were provided through the private system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The report noted that the landscape of private health insurance in Ireland has changed significantly in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/11\/18\/health-insurance-watchdog-plans-to-increase-levy-by-10\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Health insurance watchdog plans to increase levy by 10%Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Originally it was provided almost solely through the public health system, but this has been reducing over time as the private hospital sector has grown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This separation has also been accelerated by the introduction of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/slaintecare\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/slaintecare\/\">Sl\u00e1intecare<\/a>, the Government\u2019s plan to shift the service away from the current two-tier system to one of universal access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cRemoving private activity from public hospitals was identified as an important step towards achieving the Sl\u00e1intecare objectives,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Will the Government\u2019s new plan speed up the delivery of vital infrastructure projects?
