It&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1359645499002852\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nanostructured material<\/a> that can do interesting things when light passes through it. By separating and reflecting specific wavelengths of light, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/chemistry\/photonic-crystal\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">this type of polymer<\/a> can display brilliant colors within its structure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today, photonic crystal polymers have many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0143720822004661\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">real-world applications<\/a>, like high-tech sensors, remote communication and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azooptics.com\/Article.aspx?ArticleID=2735\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">optical computing<\/a>. But using this material to make soft robots is still a fairly new and emerging field within robotics.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The researchers used the polymers to give the robot a special structure that has the ability to move in a soft and flexible way while it changes colors. The team was able to control the robot using electrical signals that created microscopic contraction and expansion, which made Octoid change from blue to green to red.<\/p>\n<p>Aquatic robotics<\/p>\n<p>The octopus has a unique body that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/culture\/robo-octopus-wanted-by-eu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"c-shortcodeLink c-shortcodeLink-active\" target=\"_blank\">has interested<\/a> scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/science\/tight-squeeze-squishy-robots-could-go-from-hard-to-soft\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"c-shortcodeLink c-shortcodeLink-active\" target=\"_blank\">for years<\/a>. We&#8217;ve seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/science\/bizarre-tentacle-robot-looks-like-it-emerged-from-the-matrix\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"c-shortcodeLink c-shortcodeLink-active\" target=\"_blank\">robots that<\/a> move like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/science\/watch-harvards-wild-octopus-inspired-tentacle-robot-grab-a-live-crab\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"c-shortcodeLink c-shortcodeLink-active\" target=\"_blank\">tentacles<\/a> of an octopus from a variety of labs and companies. It&#8217;s not only octopuses, either;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/science\/scientists-build-tiny-robot-that-could-deliver-drugs-with-amazing-accuracy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"c-shortcodeLink c-shortcodeLink-active\" target=\"_blank\">sea creatures<\/a> seem to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/science\/robotic-fish-designed-to-terrorize-invasive-species-passes-initial-tests\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"c-shortcodeLink c-shortcodeLink-active\" target=\"_blank\">capture<\/a> the imagination of roboticists all over the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The team behind Octoid says the robot showcases new possibilities for <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4572716\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">biomimetic<\/a> soft robotics technology.
