\n\t\u201cTimeless,\u201d the brooding trap collaboration between the Weeknd<\/a> and Playboi Carti<\/a>, made its live debut before it was actually completed. According to XO co-founder Amir \u201cCash\u201d Esmailian, it was backstage at the Weeknd\u2019s \u201cOne Night Only\u201d concert in S\u00e3o Paulo that the Canadian artist, aka Abel Tesfaye, said, \u201cLet\u2019s perform the song we worked on today.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tIt was a high-profile debut, witnessed by thousands in the stadium and on the livestream. \u201cWe knew we had to capitalize,\u201d says Republic\u2019s Marleny Reyes. Afterward, the internet was ablaze with anticipation for a studio version. \u201cFor us, it\u2019s always about following Abel\u2019s lead and augmenting his vision,\u201d she says. \u201cNobody is better at organically building buzz than he is.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tWhile its arrival was near instantaneous, \u201cTimeless\u201d had been gestating for months. \u201cI got the rough track early on, before Abel even laid down vocals,\u201d says producer Mike Dean. \u201cBackstage in S\u00e3o Paulo, the vibe was right.\u201d So Dean dusted off the file and added \u201cpiano chords, lead lines and some layers\u201d to piece it all together. <\/p>\n

\n\tThere\u2019s even a clip that captures the moment when Dean learned that he was flipping a beat from a fellow production legend. \u201cYou can see me in the video asking Carti who started it,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s when I found out it was Pharrell.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe track\u2019s hypnotic atmosphere was heightened by Ojivolta and Twisco. \u201cAbel is one of our favorite artists,\u201d Oji (aka Mark Williams) says. The goal, according to Volta (Raul Cubina), was to create \u201ca song that resonated with the world but had an atypical structure.\u201d Twisco, for his part, used \u201canalog sources like SOMA\u2019s Lyra-08 in juxtaposition with granular resynthesis\u201d to build out the soundscape. <\/p>\n

\n\tFor Dean, the song exemplifies their many years of collaboration. \u201cWe don\u2019t really have to talk much anymore,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s pure flow.\u201d Then it was up to Republic and XO to nurture their creation. \u201cThe song has continued to thrive for well over a year,\u201d Reyes says. \u201cWe\u2019re always looking beyond the first day, week and month.\u201d<\/p>\n
