{"id":218754,"date":"2025-12-06T15:46:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T15:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/218754\/"},"modified":"2025-12-06T15:46:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-06T15:46:11","slug":"protesters-throw-crumble-and-custard-at-crown-jewels-in-tower-of-london-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/218754\/","title":{"rendered":"Protesters throw crumble and custard at Crown Jewels in Tower of London \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Four protesters have been arrested after custard and apple crumble was thrown at a display case containing the Crown Jewels in the Tower of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/london\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/london\">London<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Take Back Power, which describes itself as a new non-violent civil-resistance group, claimed it was behind the act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Footage shared by the group showed one demonstrator removing the large foil tray of crumble from a bag and then slamming it against the glass protecting the Imperial State Crown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Another then repeatedly poured a tub of bright yellow custard on the front of the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The demonstrators then opened their coats to show their T-shirt slogans which read \u201cTake Back Power\u201d before one shouted \u201cDemocracy has crumbled\u201d and another shouted \u201cBritain is broken. We\u2019ve come here to the jewels of the nation to take back power.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Surprised tourists could be seen reacting to the stunt which happened on Saturday morning, while a Tower of London worker quickly approached shouting: \u201cExcuse me, excuse me\u201d, as she radioed for help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Jewel House at the tower was closed to the public while the police investigations continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The crown \u2013 the famous symbol of the British monarchy \u2013 is used at state openings of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-kingdom\">United Kingdom<\/a>\u2019s Parliament.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"King Charles, pictured with Queen Camilla, wears the Imperial State Crown during the state opening of the UK's parliament in 2023. Photograph: Leon Neal\/Getty <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Lighter than St Edward\u2019s Crown \u2013 the Coronation Crown \u2013 the Imperial State Crown was worn by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/king-charles\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/king-charles\">King Charles<\/a> III as he left Westminster Abbey on his coronation day in 2023 and during his appearance on the palace balcony.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">It was originally made for the coronation of his grandfather, George VI, in 1937 and contains 2,868 diamonds, 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds, four rubies and 269 pearls and weighs over a kilogram.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Take Back Power, which targeted the city\u2019s Ritz Hotel on Wednesday by emptying bags of manure next to its Christmas tree, said it carried out the stunt to demand the British government establishes a permanent citizens\u2019 assembly \u2013 a \u201cHouse of the People\u201d \u2013 with the power to \u201ctax extreme wealth and fix Britain\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">London\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/metropolitan-police\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/metropolitan-police\">Metropolitan Police<\/a> said: \u201cFour protesters have been arrested following criminal damage at the Tower of London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cPolice were called at 09.48hrs on Saturday, December 6th, to the Tower of London following reports of criminal damage to a display case containing the State Crown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt was reported that four protesters threw suspected food on to the case before two left the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOfficers worked closely with City of London Police and security officers. And four people have been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.
