That\u2019s the question on the minds of fans of the stage musical-turned-box office smash. It also seems to be on the minds of some of the film\u2019s creative team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the two weeks since the Jon M. Chu-directed sequel film was released, it\u2019s raked in $269.4 million at the domestic box office. Globally, Wicked: For Good is approaching the $400 million mark. It opened to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/wicked-for-good-box-office-record-smashing-opening-1236433666\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/wicked-for-good-box-office-record-smashing-opening-1236433666\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">record-breaking <\/a>$147 million in North America, making it the biggest opening for a Broadway musical adaption by breaking the record Wicked previously held.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThere\u2019s been chatter of whether or not Wicked will return to screen in some form, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/the-making-of-wicked-for-good-1236433295\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/the-making-of-wicked-for-good-1236433295\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Wicked: For Good wrapped up the plot of the stage musical<\/a> on which the two-part film adaptation was based (the first film featured the show\u2019s first act, and the second film featured the second act). \u201cBecause of Wicked\u2019s success but also the fanship, we have almost a responsibility to figure out how we can continue in this universe,\u201d Universal\u2019s chief marketing officer, Michael Moses, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/universal-is-ready-to-figure-out-a-wicked-for-good-sequel.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/universal-is-ready-to-figure-out-a-wicked-for-good-sequel.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Vulture<\/a> in a recent interview. \u201cHave we figured it out yet? No. But there are things underway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAcademy Award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who created the show for Broadway along with collaborator Winnie Holzman, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/theankler.com\/p\/more-oz-wicked-for-good-team-\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/theankler.com\/p\/more-oz-wicked-for-good-team-\" target=\"_blank\">indicated to The Ankler<\/a> that he and Holzman aren\u2019t quite done with the land of Oz. \u201cWhat I will tell you without giving away too much is that Winnie Holzman and I are doing some work right now on ideas that aren\u2019t a sequel to Wicked,\u201d he told the newsletter. \u201cI think the Glinda and Elphaba story feels complete \u2014 but there are other aspects that could be explored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSchwartz noted that the source material for Wicked the film is based off Gregory Maguire\u2019s novel, which is one of several set in the universe. But he stressed that it wouldn\u2019t be a sequel. He told the newsletter if someone could have valid justification for a continuation beyond making money, he\u2019d \u201cof course\u201d consider that but that \u201cno one has yet presented\u201d anything of that sort yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe films are based on the 2003 musical of the same name, which was originally based on the best-selling novel by Maguire. Wicked tells the untold story of the witches of Oz. Holzman, the stage production\u2019s book writer, wrote the screenplay for Chu\u2019s movies with Dana Fox. Schwartz adapted the musical for the screen. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda on Broadway (and they appeared in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/wicked-jon-m-chu-surprise-cameos-1236058481\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/wicked-jon-m-chu-surprise-cameos-1236058481\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">surprise cameos<\/a> during the \u201cOne Short Day\u201d sequence in the first film).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tChu and the team shot both movies together \u201cover 160 days and got stopped 10 days before finishing [because of the strike] our \u2018Defying Gravity\u2019 and flying days,\u201d <a data-id=\"1236059843\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/jon-m-chu-interview-wicked-crazy-rich-asians-britney-biopic-1236059843\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he told The Hollywood Reporter<\/a>. The team finished up the 10 days of production at the beginning of 2024. As the movies were shot together, the cast remains the same for both films.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cDefying Gravity,\u201d in both the stage musical and film, serves as the moment that Elphaba \u201ctransforms\u201d into the Wicked Witch of the West that Wizard of Oz fans know, with the added context that the Wizard and her mentor, Madame Morrible, played in the film by Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh, respectively, have branded her \u201cwicked\u201d after she refused to help their plot to strip rights away from the animals in Oz. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tElphaba and Glinda, who spent the first act and film becoming friends against all odds, go their separate ways in the second film as Elphaba chooses to rebel against the Wizard and Glinda stays behind. This served as the natural separation point between Wicked and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/wicked-for-good-review-cynthia-erivo-ariana-grande-musical-1236426337\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/wicked-for-good-review-cynthia-erivo-ariana-grande-musical-1236426337\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Wicked: For Good<\/a>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/the-making-of-wicked-for-good-1236433295\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/the-making-of-wicked-for-good-1236433295\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">picked back up <\/a>with Elphaba fully apart from Glinda, who has become the good witch that fans know from the original Wizard of Oz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWicked: For Good featured two new songs not sung in the Broadway musical: Erivo\u2019s \u201cNo Place Like Home\u201d and Grande\u2019s \u201cThe Girl in the Bubble.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Is another Wicked movie on the way?
