A review in Jama Neurology analyzed research from 18 publications with data from 7,834 participants to determine if the protein p-tau217 could be a reliable biomarker to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishstar.com\/culture\/food-drink\/dementia-prevented-dairy-item-cheese-36313181\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"diagnose a pre-clinical stageLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">diagnose a pre-clinical stage<\/a> of Alzheimer&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">The protein is linked to amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain, which are known to be present in the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishstar.com\/all-about\/dementia\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"cognitive diseaseLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cognitive disease<\/a>. Can we identify people before they even have symptoms of dementia?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">While p-tau217 blood tests must be ordered by a doctor, some can be bought on line for $229.<\/p>\n<p>How to prepare for Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">There is no cure for Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, but there are treatments to reduce the amyloid plaques in the early stages. Being aware of the presents of amyloid plaques early could help delay symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">Sinvani continued: &#8220;&#8230; The goal is that if we can identify people early enough, before they even start having symptoms, then we can potentially, hopefully as medications develop, be able to introduce medications that can prevent or slow down the progression.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"irishstar\">There are also lifestyle changes that can slow the progression of Alzheimer&#8217;s.
