Social Security has a cash flow problem. For years, the agency has been paying out more benefits than it takes in via payroll taxes.<\/p>\n

The third Social Security payment for the month of August is set to be distributed to recipients this week. However, here’s your reminder that those who were previously overpaid by the Social Security Administration may see smaller benefit checks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That’s because the agency is expected to begin withholding 50% of benefits for those who have been overpaid<\/a> but have not begun making repayments.<\/p>\n

A February 2025 report by the SSA’s Office of the Inspector General<\/a> found the agency overpaid $13.6 billion in Social Security benefits during fiscal years 2020 to 2023, though the SSA has not said how many people have been overpaid.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what you need to know about this week’s Social Security payment.<\/p>\n

Who gets their Social Security payment this week?<\/p>\n

Beneficiaries who were born on the 21st through the 31st date of their birth month are set to receive their monthly Social Security benefit on Wednesday, Aug. 27, according to the SSA’s payment calendar.<\/p>\n

When are Social Security payments sent?<\/p>\n

Social Security benefits<\/a> \u2013 paid mostly to recipients who are older or retired \u2013 are typically paid on Wednesdays.<\/p>\n

If a recipient’s birthdate is between the first and 10th of the month, they are issued payments on the second Wednesday of the payment month, according to the SSA’s calendar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Recipients born between the 11th and 20th are paid on the third Wednesday, and those born after the 20th of the month get payments on the fourth Wednesday, according to the SSA payment calendar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Recipients of Supplemental Security Income checks<\/a> should have received payments on the first business day of the month, which was Friday, Aug. 1.<\/p>\n
