Venues are already being booked across the country for polling stations where people can cast their ballot.<\/p>\n

While all the candidates are not yet in the filed, there is now growing anticipation the vote will take place on that date.<\/p>\n

This would make the election just over two weeks after the Budget, putting pressure on the coalition parties to avoid any backlash against spending or tax measures.<\/p>\n

It comes as speculation heats up over potential presidential candidates, with five-in-a-row All-Ireland winning former Dublin manager Jim Gavin being linked with a Fianna F\u00e1il presidential nomination.<\/a><\/p>\n

The former Dublin boss is believed to have been approached by a number of Fianna F\u00e1il TDs and senators to seek the party nomination.<\/p>\n

However, there are also suggestions he would have the backing of Taoiseach Miche\u00e1l Martin who is under pressure to field a candidate.<\/p>\n

Several senior Fianna F\u00e1il figures told the Irish Independent that Mr Gavin has been asked to stand. However, it is not yet clear if he is actually interested in running.<\/p>\n

Support is also gathering pace within \u00adFianna F\u00e1il to put Bertie Ahern forward as its candidate for the presidential election.<\/p>\n

At least a dozen TDs and senators said they would back the former taoiseach if he chooses to stand.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Heather Humphreys is expected to edge out Se\u00e1n Kelly in the Fine Gael race.<\/p>\n

An internal contest is ongoing in Fine Gael, though Ms Humphreys holds a strong lead.<\/p>\n

Independent candidate from Galway, Catherine Connolly will also be running.<\/p>\n

Ms Connolly has the support of Labour, the Social Democrats, People Before Profit and a number of Independent politicians.<\/p>\n
