{"id":221463,"date":"2025-12-08T07:52:22","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T07:52:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/221463\/"},"modified":"2025-12-08T07:52:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T07:52:22","slug":"soba-designs-cafe-in-china-as-a-living-container-with-dynamic-facades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/221463\/","title":{"rendered":"SoBA designs cafe in China as &#8220;a living container&#8221; with dynamic facades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese architecture studio SoBA Architects has completed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cafes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cafe<\/a> and florist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/shops\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shop<\/a> in Kunshan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/china\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a>, within a foldable box.<\/p>\n<p>Named The Bloom Box, the 40-square-metre building sits on a lakeside platform, previously used as a sunshade pavilion in an urban park in Kunshan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2275983 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/soba-architects-the-bloom-box-cafe-architecture-kunshan-china_dezeen_1704_col_11-852x1137.jpg\" alt=\"The Bloom Box by SoBA Architects\" width=\"1704\" height=\"2274\"  \/>The cafe is located on a lakeside platform in an urban park in Kunshan<\/p>\n<p>The studio designed a bright yellow, box-like structure that can easily open up and close off dependent on seasonal changes and lighting conditions.<\/p>\n<p>During business hours, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/facades\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">facades<\/a> unfold through sliding walls and adjustable elements, revealing the interiors of the shop. When not in use, it folds into an enclosed box.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2275977 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/soba-architects-the-bloom-box-cafe-architecture-kunshan-china_dezeen_1704_col_5-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"The Bloom Box by SoBA Architects\" width=\"1704\" height=\"1278\"  \/>When not in use, it can be fully closed off into a compact box<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our goal was to bring this place to life through a lightweight and flexible design intervention \u2013 creating a spot where people genuinely want to pause and linger,&#8221; explained <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sobarchitects.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SoBA Architects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We sought a building that feels alive \u2013 one that actively responds to time, weather, and user needs, a spatial expression that makes the building part of the city\u2019s rhythm rather than a static object.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2275980 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/soba-architects-the-bloom-box-cafe-architecture-kunshan-china_dezeen_1704_col_8-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"The Bloom Box by SoBA Architects\" width=\"1704\" height=\"2272\"  \/>When in operation, the adjustable facades unfold<\/p>\n<p>A lightweight steel frame was used to ensure the stability of the structure on the floating platform, while the translucent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/aluminium\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aluminium<\/a> cladding allows light and air to filter through the box.<\/p>\n<p>At the side of the coffee counter, the facade lifts up outwards, creating a temporary shelter for customers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2275974 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/soba-architects-the-bloom-box-cafe-architecture-kunshan-china_dezeen_1704_col_2-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"The Bloom Box by SoBA Architects\" width=\"1704\" height=\"2272\"  \/>A long wooden bench was created next to the cafe<\/p>\n<p>A long wooden bench was placed next to the building with translucent panels made with steel frame and ECTFE membrane creating shading for customers.<\/p>\n<p>According to SoBA Architects, the &#8220;stable skeleton and dynamic skin&#8221; strategy extends the structure&#8217;s lifecycle, as well as enabling it to continuously adapt and respond within the urban environment.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/03\/12\/the-orchestra-park-soba-china\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/the-orchestra-park-soba-architecture-china-public-leisure_dezeen_2364_sq-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"The Orchestra Park by SoBA\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> SoBA draws on &#8220;curves and rhythm&#8221; of music for The Orchestra Park in China\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The studio envisions the building not as &#8220;finished&#8221;, but as &#8220;a living container&#8221; that evolves through use.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe architecture&#8217;s meaning isn&#8217;t confined to grand scales or monumental forms,&#8221; said SoBA Architects.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It can also live in a small, openable, breathable box that participates in life, responding over time to its environment and users, and becoming part of the city&#8217;s collective memory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2275976 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/soba-architects-the-bloom-box-cafe-architecture-kunshan-china_dezeen_1704_col_4-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"The Bloom Box by SoBA Architects\" width=\"1704\" height=\"1278\"  \/>The translucent aluminium cladding allows natural light into the box<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2018 by Ruo Wang and Haiyin Tang in New York, SoBA Architects has offices in Suzhou and Seattle.
