{"id":222908,"date":"2025-12-09T02:20:21","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T02:20:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/222908\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T02:20:21","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T02:20:21","slug":"irish-times-journalist-mark-paul-wins-award-for-business-news-story-of-the-year-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/222908\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish Times journalist Mark Paul wins award for business news story of the year \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mark Paul, London Correspondent of The Irish Times, won business news story of the year on Monday at the annual UCD Smurfit School Business Journalist Awards in the Westbury Hotel in Dublin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He won the award for a series of articles he wrote late last year concerning the finances of bankrupt Irish property tycoon Derek Quinlan, notably how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/property\/2024\/10\/29\/bankrupt-property-tycoon-derek-quinlan-gave-undeclared-25m-tax-refund-to-his-wife\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/property\/2024\/10\/29\/bankrupt-property-tycoon-derek-quinlan-gave-undeclared-25m-tax-refund-to-his-wife\/\">Mr Quinlan gave an undeclared \u20ac2.5 million tax refund to his wife<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Details of the transfer were included in a trove of documents obtained by The Irish Times from UK records in a long-running investigation into Mr Quinlan\u2019s finances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Now in its 18th year, the Smurfit journalism awards are sponsored by Bank of Ireland and covered seven categories. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Eoin Burke-Kennedy, Ciara O\u2019Brien and Hugh Dooley of The Irish Times were also shortlisted for awards. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Other award winners were Conor O\u2019Carroll from the Journal Investigates, Adrian Weckler of the Irish Independent, Fearghal O\u2019Connor from the Sunday Independent, and Kathleen Gallagher and Emma Hanrahan of the Business Post. The podcast award went to an audio story by the Irish Independent. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Separately, the outstanding achievement award was presented to veteran author, journalist and broadcaster Sam Smyth, who had a long and distinguished career with Independent Newspapers and Today FM. He currently contributes to the Currency, a specialist online publisher. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In his acceptance speech, Mr Smyth, who was born in Belfast, recounted how he could have made London his home and once had an offer to settle in New York but chose to come to Dublin instead. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI cannot imagine living anywhere else but in Dublin. I truly love Dublin,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He closed his speech with these words of advice for young journalists. \u201cJournalism is not a profession, it\u2019s a craft. One best learned over time, telling the truth. It is also capable of much good and even some great things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The judging panel for the awards was chaired by former Garda commissioner N\u00f3ir\u00edn O\u2019Sullivan.
