{"id":223674,"date":"2025-12-09T12:45:18","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T12:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/223674\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T12:45:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T12:45:18","slug":"cutting-calories-by-30-may-be-enough-to-shield-brain-against-aging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/223674\/","title":{"rendered":"Cutting Calories by 30% May Be Enough to Shield Brain Against Aging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A calorie-restricted diet could slow down the aging that naturally happens in the brain as we get older, according to a new study of rhesus monkeys, and the findings could also be relevant to brain diseases <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alzheimer-s-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:such as Alzheimer&#039;s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">such as Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Researchers led by a team from Boston University analyzed the brains of 24 rhesus monkeys (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhesus_macaque\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Macaca mulatta;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Macaca mulatta<\/a>) that had been fed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/is-intermittent-fasting-or-calorie-counting-better-for-weight-loss-new-study-weighs-in\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:calorie-restricted;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">calorie-restricted<\/a> or standard diets for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After these lifelong dietary differences, the researchers found signs of healthier nerve communication and protection in brain tissue samples from the animals that consumed 30 percent fewer calories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It adds to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1089\/dna.2021.0922\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:what we already know;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">what we already know<\/a> about diets with limited calories: By giving the body less fuel to work with, these diets can put the body&#8217;s metabolism into a more efficient mode \u2013 which, in this study, appears to have protected against some of the cellular wear and tear that normally comes with aging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/weight-gain-might-linked-lifestyle-220056068.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Weight Gain Might Be Linked to &#039;Lifestyle Instability&#039;, Not Just Calories;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Weight Gain Might Be Linked to &#8216;Lifestyle Instability&#8217;, Not Just Calories<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;While calorie restriction is a well-established intervention that can slow biological aging and may reduce age-related metabolic alterations in shorter-lived experimental models,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/news-events\/articles\/2025\/new-study-investigates-how-diet-may-slow-normal-brain-aging\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:explains;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">explains<\/a> first author, Boston University neurobiologist Ana Vitantonio, &#8220;this study provides rare, long-term evidence that calorie restriction may also protect against brain aging in more complex species.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The team focused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-completely-new-cause-of-alzheimers-uncovered-in-our-brains-white-matter\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:specifically on myelin;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">specifically on myelin<\/a>, the fatty coating around nerve fibers in the brain that protects them and speeds up communication between them. In some cases, mechanisms designed to maintain good brain health actually go haywire and become harmful, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/brain-autopsies-revealed-potential-culprit-130038991.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:leading to neuroinflammation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">leading to neuroinflammation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That&#8217;s why conditions such as <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IaO\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Alzheimer&#039;s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> and <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IYl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Parkinson&#039;s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Parkinson&#8217;s<\/a> disease become much more likely in old age \u2013 because brain cells are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/parkinsons-disease-could-ignited-burned-120011078.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:in a worse state;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a worse state<\/a>, and their overactivity might cause some inadvertent damage, especially if the protective sheath around nerve cells is deteriorating with age, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In recent years, scientists have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.aeb5153\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:revisiting the link;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">revisiting the link<\/a> between Alzheimer&#8217;s disease and myelin decline, adding experimental evidence of myelin breakdown to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/alz.12968\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:imaging data;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">imaging data<\/a> from people with rapid cognitive decline.
