The answer, provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/riefenstahl\/\" id=\"auto-tag_riefenstahl_1\" data-tag=\"riefenstahl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Riefenstahl<\/a> filmmaker <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/andres-veiel\/\" id=\"auto-tag_andres-veiel_1\" data-tag=\"andres-veiel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andres Veiel<\/a><\/strong> during a Q&amp;A (which you can watch below) at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/scad-savannah-film-festival\/\" id=\"auto-tag_scad-savannah-film-festival_1\" data-tag=\"scad-savannah-film-festival\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SCAD Savannah Film Festival<\/a> (where his film was featured on the fest\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/scad-savannah-film-festival-docs-to-watch-panel-video-1236430170\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Docs to Watch panel<\/a>), is simple: none of the others had access to Riefenstahl\u2019s own personal archive.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/6_Riefenstahl_director-Andres-Veiel_c-ArnoDeclair.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"295\" width=\"196\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tRiefenstahl director Andres Veiel<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tArno_Declair<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRiefenstahl died in 2003 at the age of 101, but it wasn\u2019t until <strong>Horst Kettner<\/strong>, her much younger longtime partner, passed away in 2016, that such a film became possible. At that time, Riefenstahl\u2019s archive \u2014\u00a0some 700 boxes of text, audio and video \u2014 came into the possession of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, with whom producer <strong>Sandra Maischberger<\/strong> struck a deal: in return for first-look privileges, she and a team of filmmakers would review all of the materials and make them the subject of a film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAfter that, Veiel, a veteran of highly ambitious docs, was convinced to sign on as director and embarked on a years-long effort not just to catalogue Riefenstahl\u2019s materials, but also to suss out the degree to which they reflected reality. As he discusses during this Q&amp;A, the brilliant but deceptive trailblazing female filmmaker did indeed curate the items to try to burnish her legacy \u2014\u00a0but couldn\u2019t keep the underlying truth hidden from him and his collaborators.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Some might wonder why, in 2025, yet another documentary about Leni Riefenstahl, Hitler\u2019s favorite propagandist, is needed.
