{"id":22499,"date":"2025-08-25T16:21:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T16:21:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/22499\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T16:21:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T16:21:11","slug":"grocery-prices-up-almost-6-new-figures-suggest-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/22499\/","title":{"rendered":"Grocery prices up almost 6%, new figures suggest \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cost-of-living\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/cost-of-living\/\">cost of groceries<\/a> has continued to climb, with supermarket inflation put at just under 6 per cent or more than three times the rate of general inflation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to the latest research from retail analysts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kantar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kantar\/\">Kantar<\/a> Worldpanel, alcohol sales soared during the summer as a result of a raft of outdoor events from the Galway Races and the All Together Now festival to the Oasis and Robbie Williams concerts in Croke Park. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The data highlight how the cost of living crisis is a long way from over with the year-on-year rate of grocery inflation climbing to 5.9 per cent compared with 5.4 per cent recorded four weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">While the current rate is a long way adrift of the rate of almost 17 per cent, which Kantar reported at the height of the crisis two years ago, the latest price hikes come on top of \u2013 and not instead of \u2013 previously high inflation and mean most households are worse off by in excess of \u20ac3,000 a year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Despite higher prices, Kantar\u2019s data suggest that Irish consumers have been enjoying a summer of racing, concerts and festivals with alcohol sales  up \u20ac7.2 million when compared with this time last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Kantar described August as \u201ca month of dancing, singing and celebrating as Irish shoppers contributed an additional \u20ac68.2 million to the grocery market\u2019s overall performance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Take-home value sales rose 6.2 per cent over the four weeks to the middle of August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/07\/31\/food-prices-rising-at-three-times-rate-of-inflation\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Food prices rising at three times rate of inflationOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIrish social calendars have been overflowing with consumers enjoying the last of the summer sun, spending a whopping \u20ac7.2 million extra on alcohol and an additional \u20ac1.3 million on sun care,\u201d said Kantar\u2019s Emer Healy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cShoppers also indulged in other ways, spending an additional \u20ac8.9 million on take-home soft drinks and chocolate. With such busy calendars, it\u2019s clear that shoppers needed a bit of an energy boost with nearly \u20ac1 million more spent on sports and energy drinks compared to the same time last year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">According to Kantar, shoppers spent \u20ac735 million on promotional lines during the latest 12-week period, an 8.9 per cent increase compared to the previous year.
