It becomes difficult to get out of bed before midday, socialise with others or even find the motivation to do simple tasks. This can cause seasonal depression in people. Due to the dark mornings and short periods of daylight, it reduces our energy levels leading to us feeling unmotivated and more tired than usual. If you have ever felt this way you’re not alone.

My Experience

This winter I have experienced a bit of seasonal depression myself. Waking up has become harder because it is now still dark when I wake up. Leaving me to spend several hours lazing around in bed instead of being productive.

The winter season also means peak assignment season which due to a lack of motivation has caused me to fall behind on them and rush to finish them by the due date. Leading to unnecessary anxiety and stress that could have been prevented.

Winter also just causes me to overall just feel sadder than usual which is hard to explain. Some days I wake up with a heavy heart and no explanation of why.

Life just becomes a bit of a survival mode sometimes when it hits to the colder months. It is important to remember that you are not alone. Many people feel this way, getting seasonal depression is a common occurrence. We just need to learn how to combat this virus.

Coping with Seasonal Depression

There are many ways to try and avoid these feelings of winter blues and here are the top tips on feeling a bit perkier throughout the colder periods.

Spending Time with Others

As people say a problem shared is a problem halved. Spending time with people you love this season can make you feel a bit more joyful for a while. It might not cure you completely, but it will certainly be a bit of fun.

Trying Out a New Hobby

This is very much a cliché, but it honestly can be so beneficial. Start doing daily walks, read for pleasure or collect something. The world is your oyster!

Treat Yourself

Now I’m not saying go and have a huge shopping spree (unless you want to) but I mean buy those shoes you have been eyeing up or get that coffee you wanted yesterday morning. You’d be surprised how uplifting it can be.

Spend Time Outside

During the winter we get little sunlight, but when we do, embrace the outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. It can do you the world of good.

Eat Healthy

Your diet can change your mood during the day. Although eating crisps or chocolate makes you feel good at the time it will cause a sugar crash. Eating healthier alternatives such as fruit will make you feel so much better and you’ll have more energy during the day.

Final Words

This time of year, can be hard for many people therefore it is important we all treat each other with kindness. Everyone should be supporting each other. Don’t isolate yourself, being with others is extremely beneficial for your health.

Featured image credit: Stephen Craven via Wikimedia

Like this:

Like Loading…

Related

As the winter period is beginning, life can start to feel a bit heavy.
