How a foreign nuisance can wreak havoc on a local ecosystem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">invasive species<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a viral TikTok, Adam of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@_healfarms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">HEAL Farms<\/a> (@_healfarms) tells viewers, &#8220;I wanna show you the difference in the power of the pig,&#8221; while standing between two dramatically different patches of land where one is choked by thick brush, and the other is flattened and opened up by a few dozen hungry pigs.<\/p>\n<p>In the video, Adam shows how a herd of pigs helped clear dense, towering bushes of yellowed Japanese knotweed, an aggressive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/outdoors\/invasive-species\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"18\" title=\"What are invasive species? The once-overgrown property now &#8220;looks almost like a park.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Invasive species like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/sustainable-food\/japanese-knotweed-invasive-plant-recipe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Japanese knotweed threaten ecosystems<\/a> by crowding and suffocating out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/outdoors\/native-plants\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"17\" title=\"What are native plants, and why are they so crucial to our ecosystems?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">native plants<\/a>, and can degrade soil quality and reduce habitat for pollinators and wildlife. A major barrier to stopping the spread of invasive species is that their removal can be expensive and time-consuming, so having pigs to do the job makes the removal convenient and delicious (for the pigs).<\/p>\n<p>Japanese Knotweed is one of many invasive species that have made it to the U.S. originally as ornamental plants, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/japanese-knotweed-acadia.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Park Service<\/a>.
