{"id":230050,"date":"2025-12-13T00:14:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T00:14:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/230050\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T00:14:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T00:14:11","slug":"irish-consumers-to-pay-e3-charge-on-online-orders-worth-less-than-e150-under-new-eu-rules-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/230050\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish consumers to pay \u20ac3 charge on online orders worth less than \u20ac150 under new EU rules \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish consumers are set to pay \u20ac3 charge on online orders valued at less than \u20ac150 in a bid to protect European retail businesses, following a vote by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\">European Union<\/a> (EU) member states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The charge will be placed on small parcels entering the EU \u2013 with low-cost platforms like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/temu\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/temu\/\">Temu<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/shein\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/shein\/\">Shein<\/a> in line to be hit most \u2013 and will be payable from the 1st of July 2026. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The measure is designed to bridge the gap until the EU Customs Data Hub is set up in 2028. EU data suggests as many as 12 million small items would have been liable for the charge every day in 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The duty will be charged by the parcel, so orders of multiple items will not incur the charge multiple times, and could be in addition to an EU handling fee on ecommerce parcels, around which negotiation is under way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In addition to protecting domestic, retail businesses, the charge is envisaged as a measure to compensate customs authorities for the increasing costs of the growing flow of parcels, the commission said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWith ecommerce expanding rapidly, the world is changing fast \u2013 and we need the right tools to keep pace,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/maros-sefcovic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/maros-sefcovic\/\">Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d<\/a>, the EU trade commissioner said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>Why are apartments in Ireland so much more expensive to build than houses?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat is why the decision on customs duties for small parcels coming into the EU is so important to ensuring fair competition at our borders in today\u2019s ecommerce era.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The volume of small orders into the trading bloc has \u201csurged\u201d in recent years, according to figures published by the EU Commission in March.
