{"id":23169,"date":"2025-08-25T23:47:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-25T23:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/23169\/"},"modified":"2025-08-25T23:47:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-25T23:47:07","slug":"compensation-call-for-anglers-after-devastating-north-cork-fish-kill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/23169\/","title":{"rendered":"Compensation call for anglers after &#8216;devastating&#8217; North Cork fish kill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">A Cork TD has called for a compensation scheme to be introduced for anglers in Cork who have been affected by the mass killing of fish in the River Blackwater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has estimated that between 8,000 and 10,000 fish \u2014 mainly brown trout \u2014 have died in the Blackwater, Clyda, and Awbeg rivers over the past fortnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">However, local angling clubs in Mallow, Lombardstown, and Killavullen have claimed that the number of fish lost in the kill in the River Blackwater and its tributaries since August 11 has been considerably higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">They estimate that as many as 50,000 fish may have been killed along a 30km stretch between Lombardstown and Killavullen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">IFI has yet to confirm the precise cause of the kill, and has not updated its initial estimate of the number of fish killed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Catastrophe<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">P\u00e1draig O\u2019Sullivan, Fianna F\u00e1il TD for Cork North Central, said he was calling on the Government to put in place a compensation scheme to help angling clubs affected by the fish kill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\u201cI have spoken to anglers in my own constituency, and the impact on their clubs because of this catastrophe is devastating for them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">\n            \u201cAngler clubs attract a lot of anglers from the UK, the EU, the States, and beyond.
