{"id":232887,"date":"2025-12-14T19:54:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-14T19:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/232887\/"},"modified":"2025-12-14T19:54:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-14T19:54:08","slug":"minister-appeals-to-public-to-get-flu-jab-amid-very-severe-strain-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/232887\/","title":{"rendered":"Minister appeals to public to get flu jab amid \u2018very severe\u2019 strain \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Minister for Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jennifer-carroll-macneill\/\">Jennifer Carroll MacNeill<\/a> has appealed to \u201ceverybody who can\u201d to get the flu vaccine, while confirming adults between 18 and 59 and not in at-risk groups will not get the jab for free. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Speaking on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/rte\/\">RT\u00c9 Radio<\/a> on Sunday, she said the strain of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/flu\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/flu\/\">flu<\/a> circulating was \u201cvery severe\u201d, and particularly virulent among children. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThis virus is circulating most in children up the age of 15 &#8230; [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/children-s-health-ireland-chi\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/children-s-health-ireland-chi\/\">Children\u2019s Health Ireland<\/a>] normally don\u2019t have any children on trolleys but at the moment they do and that\u2019s as a consequence of the virus,\u201d said the Minister. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The vaccine is free to children aged 0 to 17 years, anyone 60 or older, pregnant women, anyone with underlying conditions and to health workers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Uptake among children stood at 21 per cent, she said \u2013 higher than last year\u2019s 17 per cent, but still so low that some batches of the nasal spray vaccine for children had expired.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe nasal vaccination has a 14-week expiry date &#8230; So some of that has expired, but we have more of it. It\u2019s not out everywhere. There are pharmacies that have it. We have additional supplies of it that don\u2019t expire until January or February [and] there will be more available in coming weeks.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Where the nasal vaccine was unavailable children could be vaccinated by injection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Figures showed three quarters of people who are hospitalised with flu had not had the vaccination, she continued. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cI am asking everybody who can to go and get a vaccination. It takes about 10 days to kick in really, but this flu season will peak over Christmas. There will still be a sting in the tail into January.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/opinion\/editorials\/2025\/12\/12\/the-irish-times-view-on-the-flu-wave-an-early-and-unwelcome-visitor\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Irish Times view on the flu wave: an early and unwelcome visitorOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Asked her response to a Labour Party call for the vaccine to be free to everyone (it costs \u20ac30 to \u20ac35 for adults outside the identified vulnerable groups), the Minister said: \u201cWe have to take every year the best approach &#8230; maximising resources that we have for the most vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIf we [make it free for everyone] there are other things we can\u2019t do. So that is the balance that we take.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The uptake of just 29 per cent among healthcare workers remained a \u201cconcern\u201d. The target for this cohort is 75 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWhat we can do is make it available. It is free for healthcare workers. There are clinics where healthcare workers can get it on-site. We are asking people to get it for their own health, to prevent themselves getting sick [and to reduce transmission].\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Outlining measures to reduce pressure on hospitals, she said GPs were being funded to extend opening hours specifically for respiratory conditions while hospitals were implementing weekend discharges to keep patients moving from EDs and into wards. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe are seeing extraordinary work to keep the patient flow going.
