NEW YORK — NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 \u201cZootopia 2\u201d<\/a> regained the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office with $26.3 million in its third weekend of release, according to studio estimates Sunday, as The Walt Disney Co. animated sequel became the year\u2019s second film to gross $1 billion worldwide.<\/p>\n

With \u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash\u201d<\/a> arriving Friday, it was a relatively quiet weekend in theaters. There were no major new releases, leaving holdovers \u201cZootopia 2\u201d and \u201cFive Nights at Freddy\u2019s 2\u201d<\/a> to duke it out for the top spot.<\/p>\n

The edge went to \u201cZootopia 2,\u201d which has quickly amassed $1.14 billion in global ticket sales thanks significantly to its enormous success in China. There, it\u2019s grossed $502.4 million, making \u201cZootopia 2\u201d the biggest Hollywood hit in the country in years. <\/p>\n

The only other 2025 Hollywood title to surpass $1 billion worldwide was Disney\u2019s \u201cLilo & Stitch\u201d<\/a> ($1.04 billion). The highest grossing movie of the year, though, is the Chinese blockbuster \u201cNe Zha 2,\u201d<\/a> which collected nearly $2 billion just in China.<\/p>\n

In its second weekend of release, the Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions sequel \u201cFive Nights at Freddy\u2019s 2\u201d collected $15.4 million, a brutal drop of 70% from its above-expectations debut.<\/a> Still, with a domestic total of $95.5 million, the $36 million production is a big win for Blumhouse, adding another horror franchise to its portfolio.<\/p>\n

The weekend\u2019s most notable new release was James L. Brook\u2019s \u201cElla McCay,\u201d<\/a> his first directed film in 15 years. \u201cElla McCay\u201d earned a scant $2.1 million from 2,500 locations, making it one of the year\u2019s worst wide releases.<\/p>\n

But box-office expectations weren\u2019t high coming in from \u201cElla McCay,\u201d a comic drama about a 34-year-old woman (newcomer Emma Mackey) who becomes governor of her home state. Reviews (22% \u201cfresh\u201d on Rotten Tomatoes) were poor, and the kind of award-winning comic dramas movies that Brooks (\u201cTerms of Endearment,\u201d \u201cBroadcast News\u201d) has long specialized in today seldom find large audiences in theaters. \u201cElla McCay,\u201d featuring a supporting cast including Jamie Lee Curtis, Ayo Edebiri and Woody Harrelson, cost $35 million to make. <\/p>\n

With overall ticket sales on the year running close to even with last year’s disappointing grosses, according to Comscore data, Hollywood will be hoping the coming holiday corridor, traditionally the busiest moviegoing period of the year, ends 2025 on a high note. Movies on tap include \u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash,\u201d \u201cThe SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants,\u201d \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d \u201cAnaconda\u201d and \u201cSong Sung Blue.\u201d <\/p>\n

With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore:<\/p>\n

1. \u201cZootopia 2,\u201d $26.3 million. <\/p>\n

2. \u201cFive Nights at Freddy’s 2,\u201d $19.5 million. <\/p>\n

3. \u201cWicked: For Good,\u201d $8.6 million. <\/p>\n

4. \u201cDhurandhar,\u201d $3.5 million. <\/p>\n

5. \u201cNow You See Me: Now You Don’t,\u201d $2.4 million.<\/p>\n

6. \u201cJujutsu Kaisen: Execution,\u201d $2.1 million. <\/p>\n

7. \u201cElla McCay,\u201d $ 2.1 million. <\/p>\n

8. \u201cDr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas\u201d (2000), $1.9 million. <\/p>\n

9. \u201cEternity,\u201d $1.8 million. <\/p>\n
