(Supplied: Roanna Horbelt\/RAD KI)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Research and Discovery Coastal Tours on Kangaroo Island earlier today shared photos on social media of 12 rays and sharks that washed ashore on Emu Bay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tour operator Roanna Horbelt told ABC Radio Adelaide on Tuesday she was doing water testing with the Fisheries officers at Emu Bay where the algae levels remained &#8220;quite high&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Seven huge smooth rays washed up, we also found a metre-and-a-half-long shark, Port Jackson sharks, three fiddler rays \u2014 all with that typical pink belly and definitely bloom-related,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But to the unknown eye, you walk along the beach and it looks beautiful but we&#8217;re sadly getting these [creatures] washed up very similar to the very beginning of the bloom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We were seeing in early March the same kind of species washed up, these really large rays, they&#8217;re very old and one was well over a metre long, very sad to see.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A dead shark lying on a beach.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/acc8a8731b4b81ea037cc8c9cb187518\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">The SA government says the recent deaths at Emu Bay were a result of the algal bloom. (Supplied: Roanna Horbelt\/RAD KI)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Horbelt said the environment department was notified about a young male humpback whale washed up near American River on Kangaroo Island on the weekend but she did not think the death was bloom-related because population numbers have &#8220;gone through the roof&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Algae footprint reduced<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Steer said that although &#8220;we are seeing positive signs along the metropolitan coast&#8221;, there would be &#8220;no popping of the champagne prematurely&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We can see those cell counts along the 21 [metropolitan] sites are low to zero,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen about a 50 per cent reduction [of cell counts on the northern metropolitan coast].<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;[The] frequency and abundance of the fish that are washing up are also declining.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"a woman's head is tilted forward as she kneels next to a big ray that's washed up on a beach\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/46edab4a5eb11096df36e93510f147a7\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Photos emerged on social media of dead marine life at Emu Bay.
