Methane \u2014 the main component of natural gas \u2014 is released directly into the atmosphere during oil and gas production through practices such as venting and flaring, and can also escape through leaks in wells and other infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The new rules, which will take effect in 2028, prohibit venting with several exceptions and establish an inspection schedule for companies to find equipment leaks and repair them.<\/p>\n<p>Operators will have the option to design their own approaches to controlling methane as long as they meet required methane intensity thresholds.<\/p>\n<p>Total greenhouse gas emissions from Canada&#8217;s oil and gas sector continue to grow as production increases, and Canada is <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/canadas-emissions-reductions-unlikely-meet-2030-target-auditor-general-says-2023-11-07\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not expected<\/a> to reach its target of cutting greenhouse gas output by 40% to 45% below 2005 levels by 2030.Carney, who has been criticized by environmentalists who see him as prioritizing the economy over climate, recently <a data-testid=\"Link\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/canada-drops-emissions-cap-oil-gas-sector-agreement-with-alberta-2025-11-27\/\" class=\"text-module__text__0GDob text-module__inherit-color__PhuPF text-module__inherit-font__1P1hv text-module__inherit-size__EyiQW link-module__link__INqxZ link-module__underline_default__-okuC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rolled back<\/a> some of Canada&#8217;s emissions policies to spur energy investment.<\/p>\n<p>But on methane, the country has made progress.
